Hi all,
I'm getting ready to do my first guitar (ordered the stuff, waiting for it). I'm experimenting with finishes and I'm wondering about something:
Can I do a wipe-on poly over something like Tru-oil? I've been playing with this stuff called "Tried & True Varnish Oil" which I believe is more or less the same thing as Tru-Oil. I absolutely LOVE the deep sheen look of this stuff, but I can see that it's going to take a LOT of coats to get it where I want it (and you can only do one coat per day), and I've seen some stuff saying that the finish doesn't last the way one might like.
So what I'm wondering is, could I do 3 or 4 coats of the oil varnish, let that cure, and then hit it with 2 or 3 coats of wipe on poly? I think that would give it the gloss and protection I'd like, but keep the look of the oil.
Am I onto something here, or am I way off base? I'm a rank newbie when it comes to finishing, so any advice is appreciated.
