Wilkinson tuners

You need to be a lot more specific than that, probably with a link to exactly what you are referencing. There are no end of tuners/bridges/other parts being churned out by China that use (probably questionably) the Wilkinson name; a good deal of these Chinese knockoffs are very cheap in both price and quality.

here is a link to some on ebay

The wilkinson lucking tuner that I saw was a joke... The "locking" was just: instead of 1 hole to pass by the string, you had two and this was supposed to "lock" the string... better than nothing, probably, but show what's the idea of it... (didn't use it, so don't know if it doesn't hold the tune, but I don't think it is as good as others)

EDIT: Just like the pics that you show us...

Looks like Guitarfetish.com is getting some container loads of crap from this Chinese supplier that ships out of Hong Kong:

There are various warning notices on eBay on these guys, and a couple of the "stores" they had set up pulled stock after numerous complaints, like this one:

Pretty much anything you find from them is cheap crap and I doubt the legitimacy of the Wilkinson brand name and some other brand names they use on some of their products, regardless if you are getting the parts from them or through a reseller/distributor like guitarfetish.com. The non-auction price on the guitarfetish.com site for the set is $26.95.

As noted, these aren't really "locking tuners", and you can get a set of the Gotoh SG38s which are equivalent for 5 cents more from Warmoth and you will know what quality they are, why dick around?

i tried a set they work pretty well. they do lock the string, but with a more basic method than the sperzel type that clamp down. you use the two holes and they do lock and you can tune up with less than a wrp on the post. they are height staggered so no string trees required. they are still harder to use than regular tuners, as are all locking types. they do stay in tune. i have no real preference of locking tuners, i've had sperzel, planet waves, wilkinson. i think most of them are bases on the sperzel model. the gotohs are probably as good as any. i have found when using temolo bribges and locking tuners your tuning issues have to do with:
1. the nut
2. the nut
3. the nut
4. string trees
you can probably just use vintage tuners if you can get the string in tune with less than a wrap on it.
i think this explains why floyd's are still so popular and work so well. i just hate dealing with the way strings break so easily with them and the following PITA string changes.
i have never broken a sting with non locking tremolos and they break constantly on my floyd guitars.

From Warmoth, I bought the Planet Waves tuners with a Wilkinson Trem and graphite nut.  I use .009's w/ two springs in the trem cavity.  Stays in tune VERY well and I like the string cutters on the PW's tuners. Kinda gimickey, I know, but they work.

ss396 speaketh truth. Maybe there's something wrong with me, but I never had a problem with regular old, high quality NON-locking tuners like Schaller, Gotoh, old Grovers etc. There must be something special you have to do to them to make them slip, but I never figured out what.  :icon_scratch: Of course I don't have any plug-in air fresheners and my car doesn't talk to me, I leave all these new-fangled "improvements"  to you young'uns, heh heh heh etc. Creak. thud... :confused4:
