I don't think it was ever really a proper name, just a marketing term. Kinda like Flamed Maple or Black Korina, which everybody but guitarists call Curly Maple and Black Limba. I have a "Wild Maple" Strat here I bought about 3 years ago, and it's been about that long since I've seen it referred to that way.
Anyway, it's a figured maple that can't decide if it wants to be curly or quilted, but the curl doesn't really align in rows like it normally does. I still see them in the Showcase from time to time, but they're not calling them "wild" any more. Somebody probably copyrighted/trademarked/patented the word "wild". Wouldn't surprise me. The USPTO is a running joke these days.
I figured as much, but I still kind of wish it would come up when I searched for it. It's a nice filter if you like weirder patterns in your figured maple.
