called Dirty Fingers?

When I first heard it I thought it was named after a certain guitar player, but couldn't find any confirmation.

Anybody knows the story?

I always thought it was because of the dirty or gritty tone, high output.  Dunno for sure. Someone here will probably but I can't think of a correlation to any band or player.

This pickup goes back to the 70s. It was not marketed at the time as associated with anyone as I recall. It is just a marketing type name.

It was Gibson's answer to the Super Distortion, 14-16KΩ DCR and three(!) magnets, I think they just wanted an aggressive name. Though, at about the same time, Ibanez called their humbuckers "Flying Fingers".

it's just a dope name. i'm sure some adwizard mad men type guy presented it to CMO (chief marketing officer) in a board meeting after a three hour pitch session with a dozen guys who play guitar about 1 hour a week. but dang, they knocked 'er out of the proverbial park with that one. its got kind of a hardcore badbutt vibe without being too crass. whose fingers are they? why are they so dirty? they're your fingers, and (probably from guitar strings and generating tons of shred butter from marathon sessions)

like the guy who came up with Brunch. who would've thought to combine break dancing and lunch? answer: one genius ad guy (probably john hamm)
