Where to buy wood?

I'm planning a scratch body and I was wondering... where is the best place to get wood on a budget? I'm not really looking for body blanks because so far all that i've found are standard thickness and I'm looking to do something else. 3 pieces on top of each other at 1/4, 1 1/4, and 1/2 inch thickness.

thanks.

wood sources depend quite a bit on where you live. I like to shop several local hardwoods suppliers, but there's also a couple 'plywood' stores that cater to cabinet makers, and these have a limited selection of excellent woods

if you're looking for certain specialty woods (like light weight Ash, which is marketed to the instrument industry as Swamp Ash and selected solely by weight from amongst several species) you may need to utilize an on-line source

http://www.woodfinder.com is a great tool for locating suppliers near you that have taken the time to post their inventory. be cautious, though, as some keep their inventory updated while others simply have a generic listing of woods that they carry on a regular basis or can order

all the best,

+1 also for the crazy guy from Brazil's recommendation on Gallery Hardwoods ... Larry has great stock, but may not be the most economical route for sourcing materials for a prototype kind of build

all the best,

I got my spalted maple top from Frasier Valley Fine Woods in Canada. They are on Ebay, also bought some bookmatched walnut from Illini exotic woods also on Ebay as woodnlegs. They usually have some great stuff for good prices... :icon_thumright:

There are places online and ebay.  I found a guy on another forum who is gonna hook me up with some Walnut........  Glad to see another scratch builder..........Your templates are your best friend........ make good ones and take care of them

search 'luthier supply' on ebay, there is a ton of nice stuff there as far as wood goes.  For what it's worth, I have scratch built a couple and I do 3/4" boards on the top and bottom and 1/4" in the middle, usually with a contrasting colored wood, like maple top and bottom with walnut in between......  unless I am using some funky top wood.  I have been lately kicking around the idea of going a full 2" thick and chambering..... I have a couple projects in mind that are gonna go that way I'm almost certain
