When is the next GOTM

Hey Wyliee ... I kind of thought GOTM was actually good for Warmoth business, in a way.

Plus it's a good time when you get to see so many different ideas / builds / designs, together.

We all know theres nothing in it for winning, But … there must be for Warmoth I believe.

I'm sure GOTM was something that gave others idea's & dreams ........ Did for me  :icon_biggrin:

I'm sure it is good for Warmoth's business.  *BUT*  The contest was started by forum members and has always been run by forum members.  I may ruffle some feathers by saying this, but this is more about what you guys/gals want.

It sounds like the consensus is to keep it going.  I will keep it in its own sub-forum though.  For the folks that only read the General Discussion section.... you're missing out on a lot of additional info on the board.

Well sure Wyliee, *we* know that - but that's because we're regulars... this is our own personal 'Cheers' on the interwebz.

For new potential customers aka first time visitors, maybe not so much...?

ORC

Can we have a month for "solid finish" guitars / basses at some point? The voting is dominated by the coffee table / driftwood stuff. Which is awesome in its way, but there's no point in even entering a good black or white guitar.

And then a month for gold hardware, since chrome dominates? Then, a month for Pau Ferro necks because Maple dominates? Then, a month for short-scale necks, because the long scales dominate?

Watch your feet - it's a slippery slope. Pretty soon, we'll be handing out awards for losing, like the kid's sports teams do these days. Problem is, when there's no such thing as losing, you don't have any winners. Mediocrity becomes the order of the day because there's no incentive to excel and you start a race to the bottom, where everything is free and effortless.

I won April 2010 with a plain black Jazz bass.  :redflag:

Right. And Dave's "Aces High" wasn't a coffee table top, nor was the "Barn Door" Tele, or that bass designed for the paraplegic - the list is long.

What might be more useful would be a list of criterion to vote on, then use a total score to select a winner rather than just votes. Pick several qualities such as originality, desirability, complexity, aesthetic appeal, etc. and rate each one on a scale of 1 to 10. At the end of the contest, you'd have a pile of guitars with scores rather than votes, and high score wins.

As it is, there's no criteria beyond "use a Warmoth neck or body" and whether it's owner or contractor finished. So, I'm sure most people just vote on what they'd take home if they were free to pick one of the lot.

That's not necessarily a Bad Thing, but it does make for some pretty uneven and subjective voting. For instance, I don't care for most vintage hardware, so I'm less likely to vote for something that uses any of it, even though the owner may have exhibited some superior talent/skill and spent a great deal of time, money and effort re-creating an old design. I'd walk right past something like that in my search for something to take home.

Non-coffee table guitars do just fine in GOM.

I don't think the bias is against solid finishes, I think it's against guitars that look like a stock guitar from one of the manufacturers.  With all the options Warmoth has to offer, I think people want to see creativity in a guitar they're voting for.  There's nothing wrong with wanting a good standard looking axe made by Warmoth, I just don't think that many people are going to ooh and ahh over it if it looks like a guitar they've seen at Guitar Center a million times.

lots of solid guitars
I vote not by finish but by design idea and completion
some of my favorites have been simple guitars. Now I have to admit Barn Door was a extreme example of going the extra mile, but my win was not a run away, It was kinda close.

I suggest everyone put it in the hat when the contest is open, We have seen a bunch of extremely nice guitars not make GOM, and some of those guitars have been some Plain Janes that were just done right. Put any Fiesta Red Tele in there and I go Ape Chit.

A fiesta red Tele with a tortoise pickguard Adder pickups cut Tele bridge maple/rw neck Strat headstock :headbang1:

I think having a different category than just owner finished or professional finish every few months could be cool.

It was nice to have a basses month last year and I think you could have some loosely defined categories like "traditional", "80's" or "hot rod" every few months. I think if you have a broad enough but not wide open category, you can encourage some people to enter and still feel able to compete. And let people self-police the entries' eligibility by just not voting for really inappropriate entries.
