What's under that?

Approximately one billion years ago, I decided to sand off the finish of my first electric. I got through a good portion of the back and found an impenetrable red mass under that gloss black. Maybe it's the goo from GHOSTBUSTERS 2. I've been deterred ever since, so now I thought I'd ask the experts and get back at it.

That looks a bit like fullerplast,  a primer/ filler used by fender in the dark years.

Don't bother trying to sand further

Fender Fullerplast? That looks like the back of a low end Epiphone SG, no telling; might be a defective maroon SG finish that they went back over with black; get some stripper and take it back to the wood...

Not Epiphone, it's a cheaper knock-off. Company is Tradition. I've only ever found one webpage for this model.

I might decide to just take off the black and rock out with that undercoat.
