I finally have the time/motivation to get to work on my project. Blue Stain Strat (diy) with a all birdseye pro thin neck (tru-oil)

I'm using some quilted maple pen blanks (from Woodcraft) as a test bed for my stain.  I just want to get the color right.

While messing with the pen blanks I thought I'd get started on the neck.  I haven't really handled the neck that much, even though it's been hanging around for a year, but I didn't really sand down or clean the neck that much before I applied the first coat of tru-oil.

It's been 2 years since I finished my korina strat with a tru-oil finish and I can't really remember how I did the neck.  I know that Warmoth dip's the neck in sealer.  But what I'm wondering is if I should sand off the first coat and use naptha or something to be sure I don't have any hand oil trapped in the finish.

What do you guys think?

Never hurts to wash the neck with Naphtha.  That will get any oils off the neck, "just in case".  Ya know what I mean Vern?

ok, anyone have any tips for the steel wool rub down between coats of tru oil?  The gunk next to the frets is a pain in the ass.......
