What do you use to strip Poly?

Last weekend my buddy and i tried to strip the Fiesta Red off of his old Fender Jag Stang.  Emphasis on 'tried'.  I bought a bottle of Klean Strip Stripper (not sure which one), and that didn't even tickle the finish.  The ReRanch site mentions Klean Strip Aircraft Remover working on Poly, so my friend went to an automotive store to find some and came back with some aerosol stuff that the clerk said was "just as strong". Still didn't work.

Let's hear your tried-and-true products/methods for getting Poly off a guitar body.

I've never tried to strip poly. But, a quick Google search turned up this. I don't envy you the job. Stripping any kind of finish is no fun at all.

Walmart has stripper in an aerosol can.  I've used it successfully on poly finished Fender guitars.  Both MIM and Japanese made models.  You may have to let the stripper sit on the guitar for hours and just be persistent.  The last bits of finish came off with a small chisel on the Japanese model.  Just be careful.  The MIM finish peeled off with the help of a razor blade and a putty knife--no stripper required.  :glasses9:

thank you gentlemen.  I will try to find someone with a heat gun and go to town on that old body.

(and, of course, that's what she said...)  :icon_jokercolor:

I've had good luck with the Homer Formby's brand.  The first application just takes the shine off, but several coats later it came off.  I haven't found anything that will remove a base coat or opaque grainfiller, which is necessary if not refinishing in an opaque color.
