Hello,
I would like a combo (H-H) on my next Warmoth  guitar (with following features):
- solid body: 1-piece mahogany
- neck: Malagasy Rose/Malagasy Rose (6100 frets, 1 11/16", standard thin)
- tremolo: 6-holes vintage Gotoh 101TS
I play classic rock and blues, untill hard rock (from Knopfler and Clapton to Van Halen, frist VH :P)

My guitars are all single so... I am newbie  :icon_scratch:
What do you recommend for me?
Some friends showed me:
- Suhr: SSV/SSV + or SSV/SSH+
- Seymour Duncan: jazz/Jb or Slash alnico II set
- DiMarzio: EJ custom
- Gibson: classic '57

I know there are high quality brands (like Lollar, Bare Knuckle, Van Zandt etc.), but they are hard to find (for me)
Thanks

Hi Bruno, I see you are in Italy. I know of a couple of boutique winders in your country. I cannot think of their names at the moment... There are some "local" pickup makers who are doing some decent stuff. I would suggest trying to work with one of them. You may be able to tell them some of the artist who's tones you like, as you have done here, and they may be able to make something to your specs.

Suhr & S.D. Alnico II are my suggestions. If you can afford check WCR Crossroads & Godwoods.

Thak but waht suhr combo?
SSV/SSV+ or SSV/SSH+ ?
Or...

I don't know WCR Crossroads & Godwoods, but I'll try  :icon_thumright:
(thanks again)

I've used all of those pups except the EJ and they will all get you there.  You can get pretty close but it really does depend on each particular guitar and your rig. I put the slash pickups in a friends LP classic and with his setup they sounded like poop. He had me take them out and gave them to me so I put them in my LP standard and they sound great. I play them straight into a modded valve junior stack and its a beautiful thing.

It 's true, all the reasoning is very uncertain because there are so many variables involved.
However, I believe, that a piece of advice you can give me  :guitaristgif:

The Dimarzio 36th anniversary PAFs are a great bridge & neck combo for that vintage rock sound. I really like the double PAF Pro combo as well.

Whatever you choose, you should look into the Seymour Duncan triple shot ring for your humbuckers, as you'll be able to turn your PUs into series, parallel & split with a flick of a mini switch.

+1 for the Crossroads/Godwoods fantastic pickups.

You are from Europe? Check out http://www.leosounds.de/  the CreamGen or GrowlDogs are also really cool stuff!

If you are Interested in a single humbucker pickup (WCR Godwood) write me a mail.

The Jazz/JB set works really well in mahogany bodies.
+1 Mine sounded great in my epi SG (mahogany/rosewood). The same pickups sound great in my ash/maple/maple strat as well but they really sang in the SG.

Some people say that JB is too bright... :icon_scratch:

In Ash or Alder bodies, the JB can sound a little bright & harsh. However, in darker sounding woods like mahogany & Korina, it sounds much better, but if you're going for a classic rock warm type of tone, the JB may not be for you. 16k is a lot of output.

It may be too bright in an alder or ash bodied guitar with maple neck, but definitely NOT too bright in a mahogany guitar with mahogany neck.

Ok,
but in my project it's a rosewood or goncalo neck (no mahogany...more/less warm?!?!)

The choice is proving more complicated than expected: perhaps with Suhr combo  - SSV (8K) and SSV + (9/10K) - I'd be safe, but also true is that duncan's combo costs almost half ...

In your opinion, for clean/crunch sound (like last Knopfler for ex.), neck position, mahogany body: Duncan '59, Duncan Jazz o Suhr SSV?

I'm clutching the choice to those products that I find more easily and relatively favorable price

Duncan Jazz, hands down best choice for the neck position.  :headbang1:

Well, Warmoth has some good deals on the Rio Grande BBQ/TX set... a bit of a cliche on this form, but that is defenitely one of my favorite combinations...
for a good cheap value for money deal in Europe, go for a set of Hot Slags from Iron Gear.. I guarantee, they are extremely good for a low price...

Thank you, but I'd pay 100euro for Suhr pups (not a bad price, I think...)
The *combo* s-duncan (jazz + jb) : only 130 Euro.

p.s:
A little ot: in your opinion, dimarzio VV *Solo* and *Blues* (ok, not humbucker I know) are comparable to a pair of humbucker or we're on completely different levels??? (such as sound, power, etc.).
