What am I getting myself into?

About two weeks ago I finally ordered a body and neck from Warmoth after years and years of dreaming. Over the years my tastes have changed and so has my build, but I finally settled on something I think I'm going to like. The only thing is that even after going around on this board for some time, I still don't know exactly how my body and neck woods will play together. So some insight from you experienced, and not so experienced, guys please!  :icon_thumright:

For the neck I have a Goncalo Alves back and Pau Ferro fretboard, and the body is a Strat made from Swamp Ash. From what I hear, GA is a warmer sounding wood, maybe more so than Mahogany, but The Pau Ferro would brighten it up right?  :icon_scratch: As for the Ash, I guess that's in the middle as well. Ah, I probably don't know what I'm talking about. Any info would be great.

Best regards,
Michael

I think you will be fine, What you have are the post order jitters, you see you have so many options with Warmoth, it can get intimidating.

RELAX, when you fire that puppy up the first time you will be amazed at what you have assembled.

In my opinion, wood has significantly less impact on tone than your pickups, rig, and technique.  So just build it and play your heart out! :guitarplayer2:

I don't feel too worried about my choices in woods, I think I'm just anxious to put this whole thing together. I've been dreaming about ordering from W for years, and I finally saved up the money to buy. Also, it will probably be a few weeks until I get anything. Waiting is the hardest part! :toothy12:

The only thing to cure post-order-pre-assembly-warmoth-virgin jitters is POST SOME PICS WHEN IT GETS THERE!!! UW members live vicariously through others orders, except tubbytwins and orpheo, who just live with a lot of warmoth.

The PauFerro will not brighten it all that much..... sort of like taking covers off a humbucker.... very subtle if even noticeable.  The goncalo is indeed warm.  Swamp ash... good body for a strat.  I always thing Strats are too bright, so you probably are gonna have a winner.  Too many to choose when it comes to pickups, but I'd think something in the normal output range should retain brightness enough to not lose the essential "sparkle" in the tone.

On the necks that do not require finish, like Goncalo, Warmoth puts a sealer on it.  It is nothing to worry about, it wears off rather quickly.  But, for a little while it can feel gummy depending on conditions.  There are various ways of getting rid of it, the most common is playing a lot.  It is hard to put down the new toy.  As far as pickups go, there are plenty of options out there.  Currently, I am a big fan of Roadhouse Pickups, produced by one of the board members.  You get to have some input in the process, they can be made to fit a certain tone you like, and all in all they are very nice pickups.  Good luck, and to add the board quote, picts or it doesn't exist.

I have a similar guitar although Tele. Thinline which is a whole different animal - it is swamp ash and the neck and fretboard are GA. You didn't mention what kind of much you play but I think it's a great combination. I personally lean towards the theory that Pickups through amp. play a bigger role in sound/tone I do think the woods are maybe the last 15% and I think this is a nice combination.

Well... the sound that I want to emulate is somewhere in between good ol' SRV / John Mayer (I know, not the same thing, but it's kinda related in a distant way) and a Joe Satriani style. It's hard to imagine or even put together in one guitar, but I eventually want to find something in the middle that will become my own sound. I'm thinking two humbuckers and a single coil, but not in the H-S-H configuration. it would be more like a S-H-H. The neck and middle would be really close to the the neck and be almost touching, but not quite. It's hard to describe exactly what's going on in my head. I hope I made myself clear.  :)
