Cant believe quality of body and neck.Plan is to tung oil body and neck.No wood filler on mahogany as not looking for mirror finish( unless of course consensus is I should). Already got finger marks on body.Got too excited when arrived.Hope not problem.
Neck (wenge ) grain is unbelievable.Hope tung oil doesnt cloud the grain contrasts. Is tung oil application process for neck and fretboard exactly the same as for rosewood lam of body? Will keep posted. Thanks for everyone taking time to answer my questions so far

What a great project!!!
great contrasts in that Wenge!!!

I agree, a gloss finish won't go well with this body..
oh and NO tung oil for the neck!! just use some Lemon oil!!

it is Rosewood on Wenge, right? yes, I would just rub a little lemon oil on it, if you want to keep the raw feel!
so the body is Rosewood on Mahogany, correct? Tung oil would be great, but it is going to take you a long time, and it is hard to predict how the rosewood is going to absorb the oil..
I tung oiled my Korina/Rosewood thinline, and it took me months to get it right.. it was all worth it though. I have also used tru oil and danish oil on other rosewood tops, which also turned out great, but took much less time.

Wenge/rosewood neck.Mahog body with rosewood laminate.did you wood fill korina?why do you suggest lemon oil for neck and fretboard rather than tung oil.should I worry about those finger marks(can see them on edge near bridge) or will oil cover them? I've followed your threads re tung oil. C.B described cutting with citrus solvent 4-1 and applying thin for first few coats. However he also advised you for first coat to use 50-50 and keep wet for 10 min for first coat. By wet does he mean  reaply? So do I do 50-50 for first coat then 4-1 for next few?

I would second the lemon oil instead of tung oil.  Wenge doesn't need a hard finish, so why do it?  The lemon oil will just condition and darken it, but still give the raw wood feeling.

exactly, Tung oil will build up a hard finish, while Lemon Oil won't. the long open pores is what is so great about Wenge, so why cover that up??  not to worry about fingermarks on the neck.. never had any issues with that..  the more you play it, the better it will feel!

I did use a filler for the back, but if I had to do it again, I wouldn't. personally I think that Mahogany looks and especially feels great without filler.. more natural, and as CB describes it, a 'heirloom' finish.

I can't remember exactly how I did it, but I think I just applied 3 coats of 50/50 and then switched to pure. I let it dry every time (took up to a week sometimes).
Hopefully CB can comment if this is incorrect.

That neck shouldn't need or benefit from any treatment at all, perhaps a very little bit of lemon oil once a year.

The wenge and rosewood need nothing on them..Rosewood especially because of it's naturally oily nature. That's the main reason for it popularity for fretboads. The mahogany you can do pretty much what you feel like, personally, mahogany looks sweet with Danish oil... :dontknow:
