I'm thinking about committing to a splurge. There is a custom acoustic luthier here that offers classes. Total out of pocket over about 45+ weeks is roughly $4200 and you learn the craft and end up with a custom acoustic. Your build. Its roughly 45 weeks long at 3 hr sessions each week. That cost estimate includes 750 in material, training time and use of the tools.

I'd like to say yes. How do I approach this with my wife?

FIRST: Is she warm to the idea of you buying a new 'pro-quality' acoustic any time soon?
A great acoustic could easily cost $3000... (see https://www.larrivee.com/ )

One built WITH YOUR OWN HANDS becomes a "family heirloom"!!

Plus, if you already have a bit of a woodshop in your garage, you could turn this into a profitable hobby/side business if so inclined.
( or at least pay down the cost of your existing workshop)...

BONUS: it keeps you out of trouble for three hours a week for almost a YEAR.
Sell her on what SHE gets ... a regular reprieve from Hubby hanging around the house - "personal time" for her to enjoy.
Plus, ya know that absence makes the hearts grow fonder...
:)

Does that mean you know the right songs and thus never stay single for long? Or are you simply threatening to keep playing until you found a new partner, with the same result?

Share your wisdom with us, great wizard!!!
All I know is that the last time I was single I discovered women loved the simplest song on an acoustic way more than ANYTHING I played on an electric. Once we become official I immediately abandon the acoustic and go 100% electric again. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

Aka - pretending to be a normie/casual guitar player and hiding the true obsession until locking one in. If they only knew - the die hard acoustic guys are even worse than us when it comes to spending.

That sounds awesome. I would do that in a heartbeat. Luckily, my wife and I married later in life and have separate accounts so she has no say, lol.

Does your wife do anything like cooking classes? Or yoga, or tai chi? Hang out with her friends for a lunch? Initiates anything social ... jeez Mine does all the time, I call her my social director ...

So the way I'd approach it is to say that I'd like to take make some friends like she does, and I found something perfect. I was inspired by you, taking cooking classes and yoga, and hanging out with friends. I've seen you in your classes, and how happy it makes you. I'd like to make friends and learn something new. She cannot say no when presented like that, and if you can get a payment plan so much the better.

Do you have the name of the Luthier and a link to his classes? I might like to see if a local luthier will do the same for me. Thanks.

A good guitar luthier doesn't have time for lessons. If they do have time for lessons, it means they don't have orders for their instruments. If there's one in your area, after the training, it will turn out that the customer goes to a reputable guitar manufacturer. Guitar production isn't as easy as you see on YouTube. Invest in materials, tools, and search the internet for customers who will trust a little-known guitar manufacturer. If you have a technical background and can use tools, I suggest you start adjusting and repairing guitars. Buy an old electric guitar for $30, refurbish it, and try to sell it. When you're confident in your skills, your guitar friends will say... You made a great guitar, you can do commissions. If y like acoustick guitar buy used and fix all what is wrong . About wife .. all womans around the word looks and think tha same ... Do for her room or kitchen renovation , paint walls ,,digg in garden for place on flowers ...then peace on few weeks ..-) Best regards.

There are people who just like to teach. There's also a dip in the guitar market right now, so I can see this as a legitimate way to open the horizon's on a business.

ok ... Make an offer to this luthier... I will work 3 hours a week for free and you will teach me... This luthier probably has so much work that he could use someone who would work for free. You'll learn something in the meantime. This is my final opinion. Everyone decides for themselves. . -)
