Was Spock the Al Di Meola of his generation?

just curious if you think that Al was Spock's main influence. who else could have been inspiration to his technically brilliant but emotionally dead talents when he played that most memorable solo in the crew hang-out onboard the Enterprise?

all the best,

I saw him when he played with Paco Delucia and John McLauglin.  He (as the rest of them) were awesome.  So my experience is different than yours.  I'm curious, in your opinion, who would you say is both a techically gifted and emotional guitarist?

a couple immediately come to mind (in no specific order) ...

- Roy Buchanan  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=On5372UztI0
- Paul Gilbert  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqeQto8PZYU
- Vernon Reid  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZ5SVDYBNrY
- Pat Metheny

all the best,

Spock?  Dude Star Trek came out in the 60s, Al Di Meola was probably like 10.

I would never think I would open a Skuttle's thread and see a reference for Paul Gilbert... :laughing7:

I just hate those "no feeling-just technic" players (people, too)

It's all about have the stomach frozen while soloing! :icon_thumright:

highly illogical.Skuttlebut don't put Buchannan in with those toehr two monkeys. hes a legend the others are footnotes in history.

I really like Al DiMeola's playing, but I know others who do not, however illogical that may be.   :laughing7:

Mediterraean Sundance comes to mind.

and therefore Spock logically was Al's inspiration, his first mentor and mold for how and what to play. so you admit you see it too, eh?

Yeah, but the events that occurred in Star Trek were in the 23 rd century, so really, Al could have inspired Spock.

Actually I don't have any strong opinions about Spock or Di Meola.

Spock is the nerdy kid who hung out with the cool kids only because he helped them get through their chemestry homework.

James Tiberius Kirk is the Eddie Van Halen of Star Trek.

And William Shatner kicks ass.  Best actor ever.
