any one give me of a good starting point from the low and high e strings to set these pickups. i usally use fenders recomended starting points. ups is suposse to deliver my pick ups today so was wondering if there is a good starting point to help shorten the final set up point.

Rio Grandes use a taller Alnico 5 magnet that causes major Stratitis issues if set at Fender's standard specs (at least in my case).  Rio Grande recommends running his pickups as close to the strings as you can get them without Stratitis.  The way I did it was to adjust the neck pickup to Fender's heights, and lower them a half turn at a time until the warbling went away.  Volume compensate the middle and bridge pickups, and you're golden.

I ran my Strat that way for 3 years until about a month ago.  I've been playing with a country group (yeah, I know I need a Tele), and the ballsy midrange of the Rio Grandes was just too much for what I was trying to do (clear, spanky clean tones).  I set the neck pickup flush with the guard and compensated the others.  They sound much more vintage this way.  A much clearer midrange and more cluck and quack in positions 2 and 4.  Not really what the Rios were marketed to do, but they sound good this way too!
