It was like a second christmas...  Just got back from holiday vacation on the east coast and found some more presents waiting for me at the house.  Stoked :icon_biggrin:

BODY:  Hollow VIP, BK laminate, Mahogany back, 2-Fhole Strat controls, Black binding, Gotoh 510 bridge

NECK: Warmoth, Conversion Angled 24 3/4", Standard thin, Mahogany shaft, Ebony fretboard, SS6230 (Stainless) frets, 10-16" radius, GraphTech Black TUSQ XL nut, 11/16" nut width, 24-3/4 in. conversion scale

I wiped with mineral spirits to help bring out the color and grain.

Thanks for looking!
Cheers.

What's the plan for the finish?

Oh man, if I had a dollar for how many times I've changed my plan for the finish I could retire...

I definitely want to stain the body a bit darker to better match the neck.  My current plan for the laminate is trans red (slightly on the dark side).  I'm still unsure about the headstock...I was hoping it would have been a lighter shade of mahogany so I could shoot trans red there to match the body, but it might be too dark?...so maybe just shoot it black?

That's the plan....for now.

Oh no, maybe stain the back a bit, but most definitely no red on the lam. That would be a shame, just do a nice Danish oil rub on the lam.... :icon_thumright:
It's what I did for my Billy Bo...

Just to give an idea...I have a Black Korina VIP in the works right now that I'm putting a darker transparent red on...

That's a flash-free shot, so the light isn't great and it looks darker than it really is. But, I think it looks pretty snazzy. You can still see the characteristic grain, so there's no loss of aesthetics. It's just red instead of the natural brownish-tan.

It's going to have a Bloodwood neck on it, so I don't plan on any headstock finish. I'm just hoping the shades are complementary. If not, I may have to find a way to shoot some black on the face like you're considering.

Very nice Cagey!  Yeah, as great as the natural Korina looks on my body, I'm really leaning towards some color....and trans red seems to work really well with the wood without losing the grain.

Now I feel bad...like I'm stealing your finishing plan  :laughing7:

I didn't realize the knobs were placed like that with 2 f holes.

Yeah, I specifically chose the "2 F-Hole Strat" option.  I didn't really know how it was going to look either, but I'm really digging the placement of everything.

Nonsense. I'm not the first one to do it, either. I saw something similar to it some months back that was cut from a piece of Swamp Ash that had a pronounced grain to it, and that gave me the idea to do the same thing on the Korina.

Trans red on BK looks sweeeeet  :icon_thumright:

When you're mixing the red, don't be afraid to put a smidgen of black in it. Makes all the difference in the world. Otherwise, it turns out too much like a tomato red vs. a cranberry. Too bright, in other words, unless that's what you're looking for. The brownish foundation of the Korina isn't enough to tone down a pure red dye. If you can get ahold of some oak scraps to test on, you'll get a reasonable idea of the appearance before you start licking the real workpiece.

That'd be WHITE oak, which has a grayish-green cast to it, not RED oak, which is a pinkish-tan.

I don't have spray equipment at the moment, so I was planning on using Mohawk Toner.  I've seen it recommended/used by some others here...and I was thinking a couple of layers of the Dark Red Mahogany would get me close.  But then again, I'm not sure how it will react over the BK...?

I know the other option is the Preval Spray Unit...but I ZERO experience with those....or even mixing my own lacquer to be honest.

:dontknow:

For what you're going to be doing, you don't really need to mix any lacquer, other than adding thinner. The color goes on as stain first. The sealer and finish coats after that are clear.
