A mod to your method would be to counter-bore the screw holes in the body about 3/16 deep and a diameter large enough to accept a fine thread nut to be glued or epoxyed in and use fine thread machine screws instead of the wood screws. This gives you a smoother better range of adjustment. You'd still have to drill out the pickup mounting holes though.

As further evidence of My slow slide into senility, I forgot to mention that the pilot holes drilled into the body would have to be slightly larger than the machine screws, as they are no longer pilot holes but become pockets for the screws to sit in.

I've gone to M2 self tapping, threaded inserts and corresponding machine screws.  Small enough not to have to drill out the pickup legs and much stronger than a similar sized wood screw

The threaded inserts are a good idea, the only problem I've found is finding ones long enough to give a good range of heighth adjustment.

For not damaging the original screws hole , as it can be changing to others guitar or reselling.

I use two bigger wood screw (size like on Pickguards) on side , but this not easy to get into it to work on .

Later I found some very thin wood screw around 1.8 ~ 2 mm , so it can be get through the original screws hole, use sponge under humbuckers .

Insert size doesn't determine adjustment range, the depth of the hole does.  If your insert is 5mm long, drill the hole 10mm deep

Humbucker ring screws work too and will be fine if using squishy foam underneath the pickup.  But, I've had some strip when using denser foam for players that want both adjustability and a solid (not wiggly) pickup connection which is why I switched to inserts

Yes your right, the insert is bottomless. However, their also self-tapping, which means that the chips from the tapping process have to go somewhere, and mostly they go under the insert into the hole. How far they fill the hole will determine if they interfere with the screw, a longer insert will help prevent that. It may or may not be a factor for most folks, but I like to forestall potential problems as much as possible. :headbang:
