Veneers, etc.

I was looking for a thin curly maple veneer to apply to the top of a basswood body that has about as much personality as a graham cracker.  There is neat stuff available and it appears to be very do-able with results commensurate with investment.
Any opinions on finishing these? 
Also, I was directed to a "guitar skinz" site.  Call me inexperienced, but do these things actually get the job done?  I have no knowledge of these.  Love wood. Just wondering.
