hi,
i should get the mahogany (koa top) body in about 2 weeks and i was wondering how to finish the koa top.
by the pictures i have seen in this forum, i like the way the come comes alive with tung oil.
if i apply 2-3 coats of it, then do the grain fill, seal, would it be ok to finish it with polyuretane clear gloss?

any reason why i shouldn`t?

also, is the order of application above correct or should i apply 1-2 coats of sealer after the tung oild and then do the grain filling, more sealer and clear gloss?

thanks in advance

Well, fill first, then tung oil. No need for both sealer and tung oil. Sounds like you ought to check out the finishing info on the stew mac website and also read some of the old posts here, that would get you better sorted.

the reason why i asked this is because i don`t want to use tung oil as the only finishing.
i read that it will enhance the figure but then i want the protection that the poly will give the guitar.
now, if i fill first, will the tung oil penetrate the filling and will the poly stick if i don`t use the sealer on the filler?

You needn't mix tung oil into the finishing equation if all you are doing is trying to enhance the grain pattern:

1.) Use some "natural" colored poly or oil based stain to enhance grain.
2.) Completely fill/level body
3.) Seal
4.) Apply poly gloss top coat finish
