Tremolo bar. Decisions, decisions...

It's tough to beat the wilky if your gonna go the nonlocking rout. It will not stay in tune as well as a locking trem, but it will be more than decent in its ability to stay in tune as long as you use locking tuners, a well slotted slippery nut, well stretched strings, and NO string tees. Also, if you get the tremol-no, you will be able to do a lot more than standard tuning and drop d, which is all a floyd can do with it's normal setup, plus tremol-no and d-tuner. You can do this because you will have access to the tuners so you can go from standard to dadgad to open g to drop d to whatever in the same song list. If you are gonna cover kashmir and johnny b goode in the same songset, then the wilky is for you. If your content with standard and drop d, and don't mind a little extra setup then FLOYD IT!!!

Hey, do you think I should get a recessed one?  I'm wondering if you'll be able to see the lack of finish on the recessed part.

I prefer the non recessed, and beyond popular belief, you can set it up to have an upward pull. Just not as drastic as a recessed and still have a very low action on the guitar (provided the neck pocket is cut at the correct angle). Which Warmoth does an excellent job of getting it right. On the other hand if you go recessed, you don't need the angle in the neck pocket and get the full pull on the upward side of it. But you also have the big pocket in which to tend with, so to me the way I look at it is, if I'm going to have just a plain solid top or paint job. Then recess isn't going to matter, but if I'm doing a guitar with a special top, then I'd go with non recessed.

And most people that get the recessed usually just paint the pocket black, or try to match the finish... :dontknow:

Alright guys, I'm gonna FLOYD IT!     :headbang1:

I'm sure you'll be happy. They didn't get popular by not working, so you'll get the results you want.

For the purpose of this discussion, a Floyd is the answer. Not saying the other solutions are not not good, but lets say not appropirate for what you want. This coming from a 6 point Fender user and a Wilky user. There will be a Floyd build though in the future LOL.

"I want a Floyd" has been the under lying theme of the OP's posts.  Whatever he gets, whether it performs or not, he'll be left wondering if the Floyd would've been better.

nonetheless, I've personally learned a lot from reading all this thread has to say about the different trems, and I personally am going to go with a Wilky when I get my first W.  :icon_thumright:

Well said!

STOP RIGHT THERE! you say you want a lp body? try the schaller lp style tremolo http://guitar-tremolo.com/hp135042/Tremolo-Les-Paul.htm

it is very stable better than the wilkinson if i must say so and it has a range comparing to a vintage six-screw tremolo (i.e enough range to divebomb) and pull up ability too ! and the best part is that it has the same post spacing as a regular tunomatic so you can go back if you want!
the only bad thing about it is that it cant have piezos!

i aint in no way afliated with schaller i just tried the trem on a guitar in a show in denmark called vintage guitar show

it was a flaxwood so if you have a flaxwood dealer or some of your friends have one you can try the trem and see what im talking about

Not to hijack the thread (seems like the OP has made the informed (and correct!) decision), but... D... Reading
the last sentence you wrote. I was wondering the same thing:

As you can see, my recessed rout is painted - I've got some nice, thin, self-adhesive black foam padding similar in feel to
neoprene. I'm just wondering if I should protect the body and paint by using the foam, or let the paint show? I'm leaning towards
the padding unless others can make a case for the alternative...? I know I'm not going to beat on the trem pulling back, so, I
dunno.
