We did have someone on this board do a flame-maple flying V in cordovan, if memory serves. It didn't come out very dark, and I think he sanded back to get more of a stripey look. Check the work-in-progress or gallery forums to see what's there.
I did find that one. I am wondering how it may come out on something like alder. Not sure how closely related maple and alder are in terms of how they take dye. i know both can be a pain to stain or dye.
