Too much neck, too little guitar?

Hi guys,

I am new to this board and am finally getting a neck for my second warmoth strat style body. I have had this Warmoth body sitting in my closet for 9 years! Yes that's right, 9 YEARS!! Being that it has taken me so long to finally get to it, if I were to do it again it would be slightly different as my tastes and styles have changed though not by much, especially since the body is gorgeous! (Swamp Ash w/ Koa top and pearloid binding)  If I were to do it again, It would probably be a chambered LPS, VIP or L5S style body, it most likely wouldn't be swamp ash, and would probably have a string through body or stop-bar design instead of a Wilkinson. Not to mention the binding would probably just be wood. Oh well, enough gibberish! Besides, I will simply build another one... and faster this time!

Anyway... like I said it is a chambered swamp ash body, so it is pretty light. I really want a '59 roundback Rosewood neck with an ebony fingerboard  and a pearloid binding, but am wondering if this may be too much neck for such a light guitar? If so, what other woods should I think about? Keep in mind, I really want a raw neck with the pearloid binding. If the neck will be fine, then forget I even asked. :D

I will post pics of the body later. Hopefully tonight some time.

Well, you didn't say the weight of the body, but since it's a strat I'm sure you'll be fine. Avoid heavy tuners like Schaller or Planet Waves, just to be on the safe side. A few ounces at the end of the neck makes a big difference in balance.

Thanks for the reply.

As for the weight, it is under 3 lbs according to Warmoth.

with 4 pots (fairly light), wiring (very light), output jack (fairly light), bridge (heavy-ish), and 2 (or more?) pickups (heavy), you'll be adding a fair amount to the body. it wouldn't make up for a huge amount of neck dive, but it'll help a little bit. i'm thinking about getting a '59 roundback for a basswood body i have sitting around and i'm worried about the same thing. but i think with pickups and hardware it'll be a bit more balanced and i think it'll work out alright. especially with a strat body, which is what mine is.

The trem block usually weighs quite a bit, I think the callaham ones are especially heavy or something. That might help if it does turn out heavy. You can always put lead weights in the cavity if it comes to that, too....

VERY true! didn't think of that. i was just thinking of a hardtail, but trem blocks are definitely solid little weights

This is the ol' "all meat and no potatos" concept, revisited.

It wont be too heavy.

Here are a few pics. Sorry about the quality. I can't wait to get this baby up and runnin'

Thanks everybody! I am going to go ahead and order the neck. The Wilkinson I have is pretty heavy, so I agree with everyone that the neck should probably be fine. I will keep you guys posted when she's finished and post some new pics.
