Tone pot fail?

So I was switching the tone pot for the neck pickup on my archtop from a 500 to a 250, since I had switched to a single coil and it was sounding a bit too bitey. Additionally, something had come apart in the wiring and the tone pot had been non functional for a while, so I needed get around to working on it.

After I was done, I was having this issue: When turned up to 10, the tone pot had the effect of essentially being rolled all the way down (i.e. no highs at all). When I started rolling it back, the highs would suddenly come back and then the taper would proceed as normal until 0. When hitting that end of the pot, the sound cut out entirely.

I double-checked my wiring schematic (the original from the manufacturer website). Seeing nothing wrong, I switched back to the original tone pot and had the same issue. So I tried to do some reading up online and I thought I'd properly overheated both pots in a similar fashion. So I took a 3rd pot and attempted to wire it more cautiously, also using solder lug for grounding to the case, as to avoid overheating the pot directly. I pop it in, and the same issue confronts me.

??? It seems unlikely to me that I'd burn out 3 different pots in exactly the same fashion. Is there some logical explanation for this particular phenomena? Pulling the guts out of this archtop to solder and then threading everything back with yarn is a slow and painful process. I'd love to not have to keep repeating the process if possible! Super grateful for input.

Thanks
