To Finish or Not To Finish...

Interesting that this thread got revived after 12 years. I just got my second canary wood neck the other day and I was wondering what to do with it. My intent was to simply polish it up with sandpaper like I did the first one, but this one is considerably more porous. I'm thinking what I might do is use a thick cut of shellac on it as a fill before sanding the crap out of it to get that smooth as fine furniture feel. Was wondering if anyone had any experience doing something similar and what lessons you learned from doing so.
Shellac until aged can be sticky. I've use neck lacquer on clean Canary with good results. Contrary to popular belief just because it is said a particular wood does not require a finish does not mean you cannot apply a finish.
