Thinking about another short scale bass...

OK, here's the deal. Ever since I built my Warmoth 32" J bass, I've had no interest in playing a 34" bass. I sold my MIM Jazz bass and my Thunderbird has just been hanging on the wall as a backup. This past weekend I decided to start the hunt for another short scale bass. None of the short scales I played did it for me, but I fell in love with a Music Man StingRay Classic. It didn't take long before I was dreaming of a short scale Warmoth Music Man. I called Warmoth yesterday to see what body shapes they could do in short scale, but they're only tooled up for the J bass. They can't even do a body blank! I decided to see how different I could make another J bass from the one I already built. I've attached a mockup and I'm looking for opinions. The plan is to woodburn a tattoo-like image over the entire face of the body. I'm open to suggestions about what the image could be, but I'm thinking about a koi fish right now. Also, I'm on the fence about whether or not to add a J pickup for more versatility. I'd be interested to hear opinions on this idea...

Hey bob7,

News to everyone is that we are very close to being able to produce a short scale G4, a single cutaway G4, and a Z body. I'm sure the sales guys aren't aware of it yet because is still too early to officially release that information, but hey, you're on unofficialwarmoth.  :laughing7:

In fact, if you want a white pearl short scale Z body, G4 or a Black Gloss G4 single cutaway, I got them sitting here.

I wish the SG bass were available in short scale.  It would make a lot of sense since the Gibson SG basses are short.

Thanks for the info, Gregg! Is there any possible way you could leak a photo of that single cutaway G4? I would agree with Hannaugh that a short scale SG would make a lot of sense. Actually, I picked up a Gibson SG bass reissue this weekend. Very comfortable to play, but the quality was pretty lacking and the thin body didn't do much for the balance.

NonsenseTele - I understand your concern about the mismatched pickups. The MM is staying for sure, so the J pickup may have to go. It's just that I love the sound of a soloed neck J pickup, so it's hard not to give this bass the option. What if I found a J pickup with MM size polepieces?

OK I found a couple more hidden. This ought to get me in trouble.... :icon_tongue:

Cool, thanks for the pics! I did a quick mockup with one. (no, I would never actually woodburn an image over quilt maple, hehehehehe)

Why not?  I think it would look great.

Delano makes those.  You could get a split-coil J pickup (model JMVC4 FE/M2) and pair it with either a dual-coil MM pickup (model MC 4 FE) or a quad-coil MM pickup (model MC 4 FE/J M2) for more tonal versatility.  I've used some similar models and they sounded fantastic.

Bob: believe if you ask to nordstrand he can do it... but I'd keep just the single MM

+1 too on the MM only.....JB and MM don't aesthtetically look good together, dunno how'd they sound together either.

Mmmmm G4 shortscale and Z bass sound innaresting Gregg!  :blob7:  :blob7:  :blob7:

I think all of those would look better with the Warmoth 2+2 angled headstock...  :toothy10:

Oh I am digging that single cutaway G4, will this be a standard production model at some point? or is that more of one of those experiments that pop up from time to time?

They will be a standard production piece. We can make one for you if you want one. We just haven't got all the documentation and details worked out to offer them for mass consumption.

I do believe my people will talk to your people as soon as my bank account gets paid from various other people.

Hey Gregg,
What's the stats on the bodies
B1782 Z Bass short scale, Swamp Ash (?), weight?
B1784 G4 Short scale, Korina (?), weight?

I love my basses heavy........ :icon_biggrin:
