Hey swarfrat,
My weenie is prettier than yours.   :laughing3: :laughing3: :laughing3:

I'm not really sure what so say here without going further than I want to take it, but... There's a beautiful platinum blonde/raven/redhead kitty with yellow-green eyes in that pic, and you're wanting to compare wieners?

This is Ike.  He's a black lab that we rescued.  Turns out he was a "bait dog" used to train fighting dogs and has the scars to prove it.  Sweetest dog in the world with people but highly arousable around other dogs.

I hate people that do those types of things to their dogs. They are really one of the most loyal friends mankind has, and then to go betraying that trust they have by doing this, just makes me sick.

Roscoe, the Leonberger. Highly recommended breed. Bred primarily for companionship way back in the day by some castle-owning Germans. Meant to look like a majestic lion (kinda worked?)

cross between Pyrenees, Newfoundland, and Mountain Dog. A big dog that doesn't drool and whose main goal in life is to spend as much time hanging with you as it can. Roscoe is really cool. He is happy to go for walks, chill and read a book, or run around the front yard. and if you're not available, he'll just chill with the kitty cats. (see cat thread). They are companions, but learn other things well, because of their working dog ancestors like the Newfies and the mountain dogs.

Wow, your dog likes to chill out and read books. How sophisticated. I wish I could get my lab to do that. What's his favourite genre?   :toothy11:

When he's in a good mood, Bill S. is his favorite. When he's feeling lazy, Calvin and Hobbes.

I have a Basenji.  His name is Q, and he is the best dog ever.  He is 15 now, and I'm starting to freak out because I know we don't have much longer with him.  But we're trying to enjoy the time we have left.  He is still in pretty good shape though, and he still plays with the cat and runs around like a puppy on occasion, so maybe we have a few good years left.  He is hands down the smartest dog I've ever met.  He is one of those animals you could swear not only understands every word you say, but can also read your mind. He does a bunch of weird stuff, such as sneaking up on his water dish before he drinks out of it.  He's a very entertaining character.

Basenjis!  :headbang:

My Dad used to rave about this breed......Dad used to breed Harrier hounds and got to speak with a lot of hound breeders back then (1950s). They were all a fair bit taken in with the Basenji. Apparently they yodel rather than howl and can climb. Their "Beagle-esque", I'll follow my nose and get lost attitude plus said climbing instincts, and their haunting quirkiness to yodel at the wrong moment, makes them quite unsuitable for suburbia. How has your experience been with Q?

Basenjis:  A Review

Some Basenjis yodel a lot... but my dog has yodeled maybe 10 times in his entire life.  He has barked maybe 5 times.  He is a very quiet Basenji.  When he was younger, he used to squeal when he was upset.  Our neighbor thought we had a pig because he would squeal when we left the house.  He outgrew that pretty quick though.  The no barking thing has completely spoiled me.  I don't know if I could even handle another breed now.  Whenever I go to a friend's house, and they have a barky dog, I just think "Oh yeah, this is what it's like having a normal dog."  I still love most dogs, but now I prefer quieter dogs.

When he was younger, he was a pretty good jumper and climber.  He stayed in the yard mostly, but he could get over our high fence if he tried.  I saw him climb over it a couple of times. He killed and ate rabbits when he was younger as well.  Unlike most dogs that would probably kill a rabbit and play with it, Q would kill it and wolf down the whole thing as fast as he could and then get sick.  Before we had Q, we had a German Shorthaired Pointer (Bowser, he was a sweet dog), and that dog never killed anything or found anything in our yard.  Q found all kinds of stuff in the yard because the primitive nature of the Basenji is to hunt to survive.

I mentioned before that he sneaks up on his water dish.  A lot of Basenji owners have told me their dogs do the same thing.  It makes sense because in Africa, the watering hole is the most dangerous place.  You could get eaten by a crocodile or a lion!  He is a pretty cautious dog on many levels.  He doesn't eat unfamiliar things without thoroughly inspecting them first, and if he wants to go out at night, he sticks his head out the door to smell for coyotes.  If it seems too dangerous, he comes and gets someone to escort him.

Other than that stuff, he's just crazy smart, which is a Basenji trait.  He doesn't hear very well anymore, but when he did, he knew A LOT of words.  We tried to count all the words he knows, and we stopped after 100.  One time I gave him a rawhide stick, and he acted like he was too good to eat it, so I simply said "I'm going to give that to the kitty," and he looked at me like he was thinking about it for a few seconds, and picked it back up and chewed it up.

He has definitely been the most interesting pet I've ever had, and I think I'm probably going to have Basenjis from here on out.  I recommend them to people who like cats, because they're kind of cat-like in their personalities.  But they do require a lot of attention when they are young because they have a lot of energy, and if you don't spend enough time with them, they will get mad and destroy your house when you aren't home.  They have to be trained pretty thoroughly and exercised a lot.  Great dogs if you are an active person though!

She's a good friend. Both the smartest and dumbest dog I have ever known. :)

Wow, your dogs all look great.
I want a dog, but I don't have time to take care of them.
But If I could have one, I want to have a labrador or a St. Bernard :glasses10:
