The best tube screamer

I built a tube preamp distortion with other features for my college project.  Since that is old and crusty, I have a Damage Control solid metal dual tube distortion pedal.  It is built like a tank, but for some reason Damage Control discontinued all of their tube preamps and are in the process of developing different pedals.

Yeah, i was actually just reading about this yesterday.  The two Damage Control guys teamed up with Strymon effects (www.strymon.net and are now making pedals exclusively under the Strymon name.  These things are the real deal.  I just received the Blue Sky reverberator in the mail yesterday and i am completely blown away.  It does SOOOOO much more than just lush reverb (though it does that very very well too), and their El Capistan and Brigadier delays look astounding as well.  (I'm kind of a pedal junkie)... :o

I signed up for the drawing for a free blue sky reveberator months ago, but no dice, guess i didn't win the drawing.

yeah i signed up for it too.  i ended up buying it (found a little bit of a deal online).  Constant flare-ups of pedal GAS have me contemplating selling my T-Rex Replica Delay and snagging either the Brigadier or the El Capistan as well.

I am glad I bought that Damage Control Pedal when I did.  I got it from Musicians Friend as it was being discontinued. The best part about them is those three magic words " made in USA".  Keep your eyes and ears open for Strymon. I believe they are going to make great strides toward advancing effect pedals.

I have a custom made tubscreamer clone pedal and I think it's excellent. It really tightens the tone up.

I've got number 002

unfortunately he's not making any more. I think he made 25 of them.
Yeah, I have an FTL drive too. Every time this subject comes up, I have to keep myself from posting "I got a REALLY nice one, but you can't buy it."

The knobs irk me, though.  (You can't see it in the video, but in the "production" run, the knobs rub together, so if you turn one, it's neighbor turns too.)

I just got delivery of a pedal that might be a good alternative to a tube screamer type box for someone: the Catalinbread WIIO. It's said to be modeled after early Hiwatt amps like Pete Townsend used in The Who, and indeed it has that vibe. When I first plugged it in and turned it on there was no distortion (or hardly any). I was thinking What the ****, but then I realized my guitar volume was turned halfway down. I turned the knob up again and all of a sudden there is all kinds of hairy overdrive. Tasty: this pedal cleans up with guitar volume better than you could imagine. The tone controls are very effective too. And at lower settings especially, it doesn't really color your guitar or amp tone, but it's more like you've got a bunch of extra 12AX7's in front of your amp. Another thing it is really good at is stacking with other drive pedals. My SD-1 after it sounds absolutely killer. All in all, I really like this thing. My Champ stereo rig loves it.

I prefer my Rockson super overdrive, its built like a tank and has a great warm tone and really picks up on your attack and has good sustain, i use it for all my ACDC stuff.

I used the Visual Sound for a while. I liked it, you can really get a wide range of usable tones out of it. I've since bought a much better amp head (Egnater Renegade) which is two channel, and I immediately ditched the VS Hwy 808 from my pedal board. It wasn't needed and now I have room for the EH synth pedal. :) I've been considering ditching my VS angry fuzz as well, but it's still there for now.
