What is everyone's thoughts about on board preamps?  I was thinking an "on board" booster in your guitar might be nice for solos without having to run two channels on your amp.  Guitar Fetish has some for around $30?  Anyone use these or tried anything similar?  I'd like to stay simple without a bunch of stomp boxes and an on board tube screamer or compressor might be nice too.  I thought this might be a cheap alternative to buying active pickups and using the ones I have now.

Well, for bassists onboard preamps are all but a way of life.  I personally have a love/hate relationship with them (that being said my current build has active electronics).  As far as the GFS ones, haven't heard them first hand, but if they are on par with regular FX in that price range, I wouldn't be expecting a miracle.  Fun to jam around with, sure, but it won't come close to a good-quality TS reissue or a boost pedal.  Might be worth it if you're mostly just jamming for fun, I think we tend to over complicate the "quest for tone" sometimes and need to just get something cheap and fun.
