Tele neck pickup

So I ordered my body and neck. I'll be waiting at least one statement date on my CC to order the hardware - plenty of time to do more homework. I'm probably going with an Air Norton in the bridge w/ a push-pull for series/parallel. Either that or a standard PAF style pup. So there are basically two parameters the pickup should fit:

1) can balance with a relatively low output humbucker in the bridge
2) can give me really nice open clean sounds - basically like a strat neck pickup.

The Dimarzio Area '58 strat neck pickup looks like a good starting place, but I would really love to get a tele pickup with a gold cover for the look. I just think a strat pickup will look out of place. Are Tele pickups not able to produce as much volume because of their physical size?

If anyone has suggestions, i'd love to hear em. If you think i should just bite the bullet and go w/ a strat pickup, i can appreciate that.

I honestly don't care much for the Quarter Pounder Tele neck pickup... it's a bit muddy.  If it were me, I'd get a Special from Roadhouse pickups.  http://roadhousepickups.com/ He has soundclips posted.  If that's not your cup of tea, I'm sure many good ideas to come in this thread.

the fact that the description for the quarter pounder says "especially good for overdriven tones" is a putoff. this neck pickup is definitely about cleaaan.
It'll probably just end up being a strat pickup in the neck. though i won't be happy about it.

Try the Roadhouse omg...  I've got the Specials in my main Tele, and Ken is awesome about winding pickups for people how they like them.

a made-to-order pickup for only $45? that seems too good to be true. I may have to try that.
My question is, who's gonna buy it off me if i decide i don't care for it?

I usually don't get involved business wise when it comes to posting. I have a no spam policy. However I wanted to reply on one issue while it's up.

Should anyone purchase a pickup from me it should be known that I have a fairly liberal return or swap policy. Tone is a very subjective thing. So if a customer is not satisfied, I would rather swap it for something else or offer a refund. I'd rather us part "friends" than quibble over a few dollars. There is a 60 day period for a customer to decide or ask for this.

This is one of the many reasons I started winding for myself. I hated being "stuck" with pickups that did not work for me. I am happy that as a small builder I can offer this.
