I know that if string spacing is 53mm or greater then F-spacing is used. But does it have to be? I have a schaller 456 with a string spacing of 53mm and I would like to use a G-spaced pup, would there be anything particulary harmfull in doing this? Thanks for any answers

I don't think there would be *much* tonal difference if the poles don't match up perfectly, although it can be aesthetically off.
The E strings may be a little bit quieter,
here is what a G-spaced pup can look like with an F-bridge:
If you have an F-spaced trem and the pup you want is available in F-spaced, why not go for that?
If it isn't available, I wouldn't sweat it.
