Slapping a Warmoth neck with decent tuners and a decent nut onto a Squire and then setting it up well is the best way to boost the quality and playability of a low-cost guitar as quickly and cheaply as possible. There not too much left to do after that except play it (unless you're one of those folks who's obsessive about pickups, I guess)...
