How do you decide where to drill holes for strap buttons? I am building a warmoth explorer(if that helps?)

I use a Ouija board...

Or, I just reference an existing model of the same guitar <grin>

I used a Ouija Board to ask that very question once. After it told me it wanted to sever my genitals and set my face on fire... I threw it out.

I then Prayed to Jesus and Stockard Channing.

Jesus was busy, but "Stocky Chan-Chan" as I call her, said that Manufacturers Engineers usually have such things pretty well dialed. and to just mimic a similar guitar.

You gotta watch those Ouija boards close. Lotta supressed anger in those things that can manifest itself in a variety of ways, depending on who you let move the planchette. Of course, praying to Jesus was fruitless; he's been dead for a couple thousand years. May as well wish upon your great-great-great-grandfather's cat. Ms. Channing, though, is no dummy. She's now 66 years old, and knows a thing or two about straps from her research into the "Rizzo" character.

I read this and thought who is this Channing lady and then I read some more and saw a reference to Rizzo so I googled it and found out she was in an old movie about a bunch of 30 year old high school kids. It seems like an interesting movie. It reminds me of High School Musical with the guy from Pulp Fiction.

The guy from Pulp Fiction was in his twenties when he did the High School musical "Grease", which was about the same time he also played the brain-damaged remedial class high-schooler in "Welcome Back, Kotter". That he went on to embrace Scientology and play urban or alien ne'er-do-well roles is no surprise. Pulp Fiction, Face/Off, Swordfish, Broken Arrow, Battlefield Earth, etc. are all good examples of how to cast him in natural roles.

How did this get to Stockard Channing & John Travolta?

On topic: I think on an explorer there are mostly 2 places for the strap buttons;
either on the flat top before the neck like so:

or on the neck plate like so:

Tough to predict where the balance point is on something shaped as goofy as that. I guess if it was me, I'd put it in the neckplate, just to be safe. Either that, or John Travolta's forehead. Be sure to drill a pilot hole, as I understand he's quite dense <grin>

This is very nice, talking about these things. But unfortunatley it has so far brung me no further to the answer of my question.

As a follow-up question to autobat's reply: what is the difference between the two positions balance-wise and any other factors that come into positioning a strap button?

Ok, So back to what should really be just a trivial topic. The strap button is placed on the outer most point of the upper portion of the guitar body, whether it's an upper horn or some sort of abstract shape it's usually placed closest to the headstock as possible. Of course as long as it's practical. If it isn't then the neck joint location is utilized. The higher up you go from the horizontal axis you go the better the guitar will hang. It really doesn't look like there will be much of a difference on that body. It appears the strap would pretty much travel the same in either location. Since it is YOUR guitar the best way is to figure it out YOURSELF. Put the button on the neck plate first since this is the easiest to do and if you don't like it you won't be left with a hole in your guitar since you would be utilizing an existing screw location. In the time you've spent with this thread John Travolta could have already been rockin out on your Explorer.
