Spalted Maple Tele

So I'm finally underway with my first build. After a number of delays (my day - and sometimes night job, changing necks midstream, etc.) and oh yeah, the holidays, I'm finally making progress. I've leveled and finished the SS frets, installed the tuners, dry fit the pickups, and next step is soldering together the electronics. As an aside, who knew the pot shaft has to be so long on these rear loaded bodies. Not me, guess that happens on your first build. A few tease pics for now....

Well, yes, obviously, because that figuring is REAL.

Haha, very true!
Which reminds me, my friend had a cheap guitar from wal-mart of something like that, and there was figuring printed on, over the clear coat, and it rubbed off while he was playing it. That was a lesson and a half!

I don't care who you are, that's funny! I just love the 3D aspect of good flaming as you look at it from different angles. I think they call the optical effect "chatoyance", but to your point, I call it dead sexy.

I'm madly in lust with spalted maple. That is going to be one nice Tele. Great pics, too. More please!

Well, I'm a late convert, but making up for lost time! The figuring on this body makes it look like the pickups are spewing flames and smoke out the back of them!

No more of the spalting at this point (more to come as I progress), but here's two more pics for now...

Flame maple necks are probably one of the nicest looking necks to me. That just looks amazing...

Seeing this today reminded me - I gotta quit my day job, or I'll never finish my Tele! Wiring is 75% done, then we're gonna string her up and shoot her. Photos, that is....

Oh man, the cavity covers are the actual piece of wood removed for the route... there needs to be an :exploding-head: emoji icon thing...

Ha, just to be clear, that's a Paul Reed Smith guitar in that last photo, but I hear you!

Yeah, I wasn't under any false impressions on that count. An impressve touch regardless of the name on headstock, never seen that before.

Alright, maybe someone can relate. I solder all the pots, switch, jack together after triple checking polarities, accuracy of the schematic against other similar ones, etc. Moment of truth, plug her in, tune one string up and....nothing. No sound coming out. Check all wiring again. Looks good. Check both pickups straight to the jack. They work. Maybe the 4 way switch is defective. Pull it out and look at it close. Seems ok, tests out with continuity checker. Remember a drop of solder that kind of slid down one of the lugs on the pot. Thinking maybe that caused a short just inside the pot. Literally disassemble the pot. Pull the sucker apart. Wow, very close to shorting, but no dice, it's not shorted. Put everything back in. Solder it all up again. Out of desperation, I think to bridge the two pots with a wire touching both of their cases.

We have sound. Normal sound. Like, a guitar sound. Then I realize.... the schematic assumed installing the components on a control panel. A metal control panel. Like a regular Tele. Not like my Tele, which doesn't have a control panel. Doh!  Anyway, hey, stop laughing!  :laughing7:

So, just finished the nut slots, next step for another day - stringing her up and doing the whole truss rod, intonation, string height and pickup height dance. Yeah, I do know how to do that..... probably will seem like the easy part now.

I think it's a safe bet that there's plenty of us around here that can relate to that story...  Glad you got it sorted!
