Sonic Blue-ish dye finish?

I want to see if I can pull off a dye finish, or some other kind of stain, so that I can finish the body in Tru Oil. Any suggestions on how to pull off a Sonic Blue tint?

Sonic blue is an opaque finish, so you're not going to be able to dye/stain to get that. You need pigments suspended in some sort of finish. If you don't have a spray rig or don't want to do rattle cans, you're probably out of luck.

There's a company out there called "Reranch" who does guitar finishes in a rattle can with high-quality material. I'm sure they could satisfy if you're determined to do it yourself. Otherwise, you might want to get in touch with Tonar. He's a member here who does flawless high-end finishes. Do a search on his name, and send him a PM.

You could check out wudtone. Not an oil finish but a similar-ish process. I'm not sure which kit would be closest to sonic blue but both the 'azure sky' and 't-bird' kits come with the base colour and white to mix to the shade you want. They're very quick to respond to emails so I'm sure they'd advise or even mix you a custom kit.

Please don't take this as a full-on recommendation though - I'm part way through a wudtone finish and it hasn't been entirely smooth sailing. Likewise, I don't buy into the claims about tonal benefits, it's just a fairly cheap diy option that (apparently) can give good - and interesting-looking - results.

reRanch.  The paint colors are awesome.  The spray systems are not.  I always keep a rag with a little thinner on it to wipe down the spray nozzle.  Eliminates clogging and getting splotches on the finish

Ive done Reranch several times, and as a result now develop skin reactions every time I go anywhere near their products. I'm never going near nitro again, as nice as ti may look and feel. I actually prefer a Tru Oil finish, and have done a ton of them. I need to find something water based that will sit well underneath polymerized oil.

FWIW, here's exactly what I'm after, only with a mint guard:

BTW, I absolutely love the Jazzmaster with the Floyd Rose! That was going to be my summer project. What are the pickups?

That's an awesome finish. Like a kid of a Mary Kaye and a Sonic Bluc that unexpectedly did not turn bad.

Look into milk paint.  I haven't used it before, but it's opaque and water based.

You can thin it way down and once it dries it's chemically inert and, I imagine, will sit under tru-oil just fine.  Obviously you'll want to try it on a piece of scrap first, but this might get you where you want to go.
