That guy is actually a pretty good slide player, respectful towards the original, not just copying, in-tune when he stops on a note. Years back I played in a band with a few older guys who had "gotten volunteered" into the Army in 1967 and they said Saigon, Manila and anywhere else GI's congregated to get blitzed beyond the Gates of Hades had a whole bunch of these bands, some of them pretty good - these guys (bass & drums) would sit in when they could. It was the fervent dream of every kid there to make it to America, where the streets were paved with wild hippie chicks. Sadly, things didn't quite go their way. :sad1:

Kinda surprised to see him playing slide on an LP. Not that it's unheard of, just unusual.

These guys are Japanese (you can tell by the writing). And if you think this is funny, realize there's a pretty sizeable reggae and ska scene in Japan.

There's a lot to be said for immersion as part of acculturation; you'll always be better at doing something 'we' do as opposed to what 'they' do, if only because you get a much deeper and broader exposure to it. I'm not trying to get to issues of authenticity as much as instinct. Expression of something is always different from emulation of it.

Here in Hong Kong, there's really no sense of groove because traditional Chinese music is more melody than rhythm, and current music (Cantopop) is mostly ballads, so there's not much need for swing, much less ability to execute it. Also, Western music isn't really popular here like it is in the rest of Asia, where it has brought more groove to bear (so to speak).

Most of the bands on the R&R circuit of the Vietnam era were Filipino, and to this day they pretty much rule the cover-band circuit here in Hong Kong (and a lot of the rest of Asia too).

And they're SCARY good. But you would be too playing 6-10 hours a night (and usually 10-6 at that) 6 days a week.

Not to mention its gotta be a thankless task to put up with drunken expat bankers for a living (at least here in Hong Kong).

That's enough outta me.
