Snake head limited options?

Why can’t we get a snake head with a fretboard other than maple?

I've often wondered this too. Seems unneccessarily restrictive. If you are looking to build one and need a neck with more options, check out Guitar Mill.

You could always order a straight paddlehead with your choice of options and shape it into a snakehead.

I checked that out, too. The paddlehead looks more attractive if you want non-snakehead options. I've never asked but it's possible W might drill the tuner holes for you. If not, you can do that easily enough.

I can say from experience that Warmoth has no compunction about charging $500+ for a neck outfitted with bells and whistles. All the same, I suspect that you are probably correct: limited sales appeal translates to limited development.

The 3.5mm dots are only available on a snakehead. They are offered in black color only. I don't know if it has changed, I asked in 2014 and they wouldn't do it.

I am only speculating, being a non-Warmoth-employee, but it may well be that the Snakehead CNC program is based on the Total Vintage one-piece neck program, which may differ from the two-piece neck programming. 


My guess is you'd be able to get a Snakehead custom cut from a two-piece (i.e., shaft is one wood, fretboard another) for an upcharge, as others have suggested.  But the small dots may well be integral to the Snakehead programming.

I always thought the Snakehead could be a good looking option for a V shape body like the Switchback from Warmoth but they only seem to make the Snakehead with a Tele square heel. I suppose ordering a body with a Tele neck pocket for the $15 upcharge is a work around. But I have always thought the Snakehead headstock had more potential for Warmoth if they gave it more options.
