should I install a piezo, or rip out the guts of a variax?

I like to have an acoustic tone in my les paul, but I'm undecided wether or not to use a variax, or just regular piezo-saddles. What would you guys do?

having played both, go with the variax.  besides - you need another guitar  :icon_thumright:

If you going along with your usual LP build, neither is going to be an easy job.

From what I have seen of LP Tune o matic piezo bridges, you would have to drill at least one extra hole into the top of the guitar to squeeze the piezo wires through into the bridge pickup cavity then onto the control cavity. Then there's the issue of the battery. In a traditional LP control cavity (diamond shaped) there wouldn't be enough space. Maybe some space with the larger Warmoth cavity? You'd also have to establish what sort of preamp to fit in too (if the piezo system doesn't have one).

From what I've seen of Variax componentry, it's basically designed around one or two body shapes, so adapting it to an LP body might be challenging. If that can happen, again the issue of space available to fit it all in pops up. Might be better going with Warmoth Variax body and necks, and have a different body style this time.

Of the two systems, I would argue that you could get better results from a Variax system if it was reliable and had decent sound reproduction. The piezos seem to be very dry and harsh at times in some amps, and it juts enhances the existing sound you can get out of that guiatr, but steers it towards acoustic sounding territory. The Variax, on the other hand, is supposed to replicate other guitars totally.

With the fishman piezo there is no need to drill into the body. All you need to do is make a small notch in the bottom of the bridge pickup ring and run the wire into the control cavity. and the battery is only needed if you are using the Powerchip. This is how I have it setup on my LP
