SG build query

I'm stumped  :dontknow:  as to which way to go with a neck, for a SG body finished in a solid colour.

I've gone to the LP Warmoth Pro Angled Neck Builder … Did a Raw and Painted one.

Both using these same spec's.
IE: Nut, Ebony Unique Fretboard Choice, SS Frets, Inlays of choice.

1) Using Maple Neck wood (with above) completely finished in the solid colour to match the body.
2) Using Wenge Neck wood (with above)

Price difference is $15 …. the Painted one is the dearer one. (big deal)  :laughing7:

The painted one would look great, just like photoguys one.
Ebony with a Black nut on the painted neck almost looks like it has binding on it.
That was my original thought on this build.
But it was my idea for that Alpine White Strat I just did too.
So …. I'm leaning towards the RAW neck.
Just nicer to play on  :guitarplayer2:

I know Wenge is pretty dark (that's ok, I do have one here) but I've also seen some
that has the lighter look with lots of grain.
Think if I could get a lighter grainy looking Wenge, that would blend in a lot better with a solid colour.
Suppose I just ask for that …  :dontknow:

Which way would you go ? …… Painted or RAW ?
Anyone got some Wenge LP pic's ? ... Back only thanks
Cheers  :icon_biggrin:

Pic of a lighter, grainier one.

I think the wenge would sound awesome on an SG...

No natural light here at 2:22 AM, so here's some pics of my Wenge/Bloodwood neck via iPhone flash:

Yep thanks  :icon_thumright: like that or even more grainer would be good.

There are bugger all Wenge necks on the showcase at the moment to get a decent look at.
Hence why I asked for pic's.
The LP or Warmoth necks seem to use more of the grainier lighter colour wenge look from what i've seen.

This is my very dark strat wenge neck.
With the other one I posted earlier. Big difference  :o

I fully understand.  I nearly went with a Unique Choice 'board when I ordered mine but decided to let the the wheels of chance spin.  I got a pretty nice piece. I prefer the wavier, more varied colour to the subdued one like the strat pic you posted.
There's 13 Bass necks to look at as well, if you haven't been there yet: http://www.warmoth.com/Pages/ClassicShowcase.aspx?Body=1&Bass=1&Path=Spotlight&nWood=31&sort=price

If you're set on a solid colored body, I think you ought to go with the most outrageous grain you can get your hands on for the neck.  You've seen Quty Pie, and no doubt noticed she's got just the opposite -  completely uniform dark chocolate brown.  In the context of the heavily figured top, that seemed the way to go - only one outrageously busy feature per axe, thankyouverymuch.  With a solid colored body, your choices are heavily figured lumber for the neck or fingerboard (cool) or a wacky pickguard (not as cool).

I sent a email asking about getting a more lighter / grainier looking Wenge neck wood for either a Warmoth or LP neck.

Reply ...
We cannot guarantee the look of a neck shaft in Wenge; too much can change once we start cutting wood.
It is a pretty consistent species, nearly always a dark chocolate brown.
Bear in mind that it darkens naturally over time due to absorption of the oils from your hands.

Yep fully understand ...
 Stupid me forgot that your not gunna see the full grain / colour un-till it's been shaped  :toothy11:

That would explain why there is no unique neck wood choices.

Now ... is there any difference in a Warmoth & a LP neck headstock ? :dontknow:

I presume it's just the shape.

The string pull is straighter on the Warmoth headstock.  Not straight, buit straight-er.

Thanks Bagman  :icon_thumright:

Of cause I'm just use to the look of a LP headstock.
But I thick a Warmoth would still suit and look good on a SG  :icon_scratch:

Plus would give more of a Custom look too  :icon_biggrin:

I agree. Plus, I've always thought the "open book" style headstock Gibson used on SGs from about '62 on looked out of proportion for some reason. Don't know why, because it looks right on a Les Paul, which has a smaller body. It's probably just me. But, I think the Warmoth headstock would look great. Either that, or get a paddle head and cut one of the original Gibson narrow-style headstocks yourself, which is what I'm considering.
