Black Korina beauty with EMG 35 and MM pickups. Gonna stain the body Chardonnay red and probably some ebony accents, then paint phoenix design over a portion of that. (need to rethink the actual layout of the phoenix now that I know where the pickups will be located)

Then its going to get a Wenge/Ebony neck with gold frets and probably abalone dots.

Thanks! im excited about this one its only my second build and im really putting the effort into this one, the first was a low budget strat "experiment". the original concept art is here http://finchmsu.deviantart.com/art/SG-Bass-Concept-Art-1b-138436106 i did that mock up with a lil photo manip of the stock mahogany image on the Warmoth site then combining it with a scanned image of some test artwork. I wasnt exactly sure where the pickups would go or how big they would be, and I dont think im going to use a pickguard in the end. Now i ll probably shift the phoenix down lower rather than have its wings running through pickup space, but the jury is still out on that...

Y'know, I don't typically get into SG basses.... but that one there is really nice looking.  The black korina totally is a win here.  Rock on!

Shouldn't this be titled "EB-3 Bass"?

Yes, and you will find them in the "SG" section on the main site.

can I ask what the real difference is (potato/potatoe?) since the Gibson website has listings for both SG and EB basses?

EB probably stands for Electric Bass. They came in a few shapes. Gibson's EB basses on the site may be the 335-style ones, and the SG ones are the SG styled ones. In reality, they were all EB models.

Original Gibson EB-1 bass was a solid body viola shaped bass that Hofner copied and the rest, as they say, is history if you were living in Merseyside at the time!.

Then came the EB-0 short scale, 1 pickup, firstly fashioned on a Les Paul Special double cutaway body design then moved over to the SG lookalike when that design was released.

There was also, concurrently with the EB-O, the EB-2, which was based on the 335 body shape.

Then came along the EB-3, SG shaped, but with two pickups. EB-3 was never any other shape other than SG shaped.

Not to mention the Les Paul Signature (335 elongated shape) & Triumph (Les Paul Recording simile), Grabber and Ripper, RD Bass, Thunderbirds etc......... :help:

Good website detailing the various bass models of Gibson below:

ah now see, there's the explanation I was looking for. I have to admit I know very little about advanced guitar history ;) I titled the thread based off what Warmoth called the body, which is an SG Bass.

Finch, it's your bass mate. Call it whatever you want to call it! That's the beauty of building your own. :icon_thumright: :icon_biggrin:

I was just curious myself about the lineage of the Gibson Basses, and found the website which seemed to have quite a definitive webpage dedicated to them.

oh i agree, it just made me wonder, and I was being too lazy to do the research when i figured someone here had the quicker answer ;)

Not sure what to officially name this guitar just yet, we will see how it looks and sounds and see what is appropriate I guess...

Max 2.

Warmoth calls it an SG, it looks like an SG, and if you were to say "SG Bass", everyone can picture what it looks like.  I think "SG Bass" hits the mark.  To someone not in the know, saying EB, EB-1, EB-2, or EB-3 might get a look at which point you would say, "Ya know, the SG Bass."

BTW, what does "SG" stand for?
