I recently bought a Epiphone prophecy guitar and the epi-active pickups are great!  It actually made me decide to go active with my Warmoth product so I ordered a Seymour Duncan Blackout pickup.  I'll post my thoughts when it comes, I was surprised to find it comes with both a tone and volume push pull pot, 9 volt clips, wires, and end jack for the same price as a passive pickup?  I'm assuming there must be more labor involved in the making of the passive pickups or more copper or something?  Anyway I was going to go with the EMG 81 but decided to try the blackout and see how it performs.

EMG's include all that as well, only difference is you only get a push-pull pot with the EMG 89 (and now the EMG 81-TW). Which Prophecy guitar did you get? I played an SG at my local store but, didn't get a chance to plug it in. It was nice but, the figuring on the veneer was non-existent. I have to plug it in next time and check out those Epi pups.

I got the em-2, I'm really happy with it, the neck is a 14" radius and plays really fast.  I was going to buy another jackson or esp but decided to try the em-2 first just because it was something different.  I'm glad I tried it first!

i'm guessing more coper and higher demand.
the components of a preamp cost next to nothing. but raw coper is somewhat expensive. probably the most expensive part of a guitar pickup.
