SELECT FINISH CATEGORY (Ultimate Finish/Color?)

Hard to forget Cagey's strong warning about color/finish selection and how SOLID appeared to be the more realistic finish.  I'm ready for another Warmoth project now and many of my previous selections have been with nice laminate tops and so most of my choices have been between GLOSSY and SATIN.  Now that I want to design/order a colored guitar (probably a red or black guitar), I want to avoid selections that have not worked for many of you here and want to choose between selections that you have seen to look like your Warmoth guitar came right out of the Fender Custom Shop!  :guitarplayer2:

Well, the finishing department is really very good at its job, so if you don't like what you got, it's very likely because you ordered something that just turned out not to be to your taste.


That said, black and cream and chrome with a maple/macassar neck did nicely for me on my GOTM/GOTY winner (also see sig block below).

I really love a beautiful wood finish.  :glasses9:  Nothing finer in my humble opinion!
That being said, you cannot go wrong with a black guitar or car...
When they are clean, they are timelessly classic!
I have not really searched out black guitars, but out of chance, I happen to have ended up with 6 of them.
Try it, you'll like it...

I've completed many Warmoth wood finishes with results always very pleasing and impressive.  This may be my first color selection and just wanted to confirm that SOLID is the finish of choice when it comes to "colors?"  Thanks again!

I'm not sure I follow you.  It's really a matter of taste.  Transparent colors look very nice much of the time, too.  Sounds like you're asking us to tell us what you will like, or else to confirm what you already suspect, i.e., that black or red will look good.  It's really up to you, my friend.  We're just dudes (and a few women) on the internet with opinions.

It doesn't work that way with choices that are made on the basis of taste.  It's like saying "just wanted to confirm that BERRIES are the food of choice when it comes to fruit." Some people like berries, some people don't, and some people choose fruit based on their appetite when they are buying food.

There are just as many outstanding solid finished guitars as there are hideous ones. What matters is choosing the right plan for something you would appreciate. If you want a solid finish, then either think of a color you love, and design a guitar around it, or just find a really classy theme and do something with it.

I don't remember saying anything like that. What I probably said was you don't want to mix fancy body woods with fancy neck woods, as it can either get too busy and/or diminish the impact of one or the other. For instance, a Zebrawood fretboard probably wouldn't do well against a Curly Maple top. But, you don't necessarily have to do "solid" colors. I would just opt for something opaque, so metallic, metal flake, candy, solid would all likely look better. Well, maybe not metal flake...

The candy colors are super-attractive. I've had candy tangerine and candy red here and they're both spectacular. Like to get a candy blue someday. Maybe a candy yellow...

 

What would be wrong with one of those?

Possibly something is going astray in transalation here. Are you asking for recommendations for the type of finish - solid/metallic/candy etc? Or recommendations of the colour itself? Or the combination of the other parts with certain finishes - ie which scratchplate/hardware/neck & fingerboard woods work well with a red body?
