Sad... so I'm going to buy myself a toy from BYOC

I've had a very depressing week.  My awesome, amazing Basenji died on Saturday.  He had been with me for 16 years, I got him when I was 11 as an early birthday gift.  My house has been very quiet and somber all week.

So basically, I need some sunshine.  I'm trying to decide if I'm going to get the big beginner BYOC package (beginner's tools, signal tester, Confidence Boost, + 2 easy kits) or the medium beginner package (all that but only one easy kit included besides the Boost).

I'm definitely getting the Tremolo, and if I get the bigger package I'd probably get either the British Blues Overdrive or the Classic Compressor.  I'm torn on the compressor because I think I might want to wait and do the 5 Knob Compressor later.  The Octave Fuzz and Scrambled Octave sound like fun too, but I already have 2 fuzz pedals, so I don't know.  Or maybe I'll just get the Tremolo for now.  What do you guys think?

I am so sorry for your loss. I've been there a couple of times. Bailley and Sinbad each gave me 14+ years of companionship. I grieve with you.

I can't help with the toys, but I'm sure you'll make a great choice.

I'm really sorry for your loss! :( "Samson", our pug of 13 years, passed back in September, it was rough. My deepest condolences to you right now.

As for the BYOC stuff, I say go all out and get the bigger kit, that's what I would do in your situation, I'd want a lot to keep myself busy with something fun. Me personally, I'd say get the blues OD & the scrambled octave, and go ahead and get the 5 knob comp later. You can never have too many pedals, you can always sell em off or give em to friends later on, plus it's fun to come up with awesome & creative paintjobs for em too!

Sorry to hear about your little one :( I love animals...

A guitarrist that I was guitar tech had a Blues braker pedal... I always loved it and really miss when he sold it...

Very cool about the pedals. I would not bite off too much too soon. Get one of the smaller packages. If you find you like building them you can get more later.

I have built a bunch of their pedals, and they are fun.  The classic comp is quite different than the five knob comp.  I prefer the classic's sound.  More like the Dynacomp.  Once you use one of those comps, you won't be able to describe it, but you'll always want it in the signal.  The Triboost is another remarkably fun pedal for being a boost.  It has the Zvex SHO, the Dallas Arbiter Rangemaster (with multi band boost, not just the original), and a Silicon boost all in one.  Not exactly the originals, but close enough.  Makes tube amps get all cranky on you.

My condolences on your dog.  Our family dog is an integral piece of the family, and it would be hard to imagine things without him.

Sorry for your loss, I've had my dog for my entire 18 years of life, I can't imagine life without her.  :-\

BYOC has always been a captivating idea to me, this triboost thing does sound pretty cool, but I'd probably just get one pedal to start with and make sure you like it before you make a bigger commitment.

Sorry for your loss :-\ I've never had a dog, I can only imagine how it must feel.

I say go for the bigger one. You'll enjoy them, you'll love how they sound, and you'll want to do more. I didn't do it this year, but the last two years around Christmas time I did their 4-for-3 deal (really a 25% off coupon) and plowed through all 4 in the week between Christmas and New Years.

Thanks for the advice and condolences.

I think I'll get the smaller package with the Tremolo.  I just remembered that I'm going to Amoeba Records next week, so I don't want to blow all my money.  :laughing7:  I think if I get through the Confidence Boost and the Tremolo successfully, I'll get the Compressor and then the British Blues Overdrive.  If I get through those relatively simple pedals, I'll get the Tri-Boost cause that sounds really cool.  I'm kind of curious about the Lazy Sprocket too.  I've been on the BYOC site since Monday looking at the different descriptions, and there are quite a few that sound intriguing, especially because I don't have that many pedals yet.

I've got a Fuzz Face, Big Muff PI, modded DS-1, Boss Loop Station, Digitech Whammy, and a crappy multi-effect.  I want to get rid of the multi-effects and replace it with good pedals that do all the stuff that it does, but way better.

On the sadder note - Losing a dog is very hard because when you have a family dog, no matter what happens in the family with people getting mad at each other or whatnot, everyone loves the dog.  That's how it was at my house anyways.  And then there are the routines that get disrupted.  I used to always pet him on the way out when I was going to work and say "Be a good dog today", and today I caught myself telling one of the cats to be good as I was leaving.  It's just weird.

My husband said that after we move later this year he'd be okay with getting a puppy though, so that's kind of nice.  It's not going to be the same, but puppies are so much fun.  I loved it when my dog was in his prime and I could take him all over the place.  I even took him to the guitar shop all the time, and the guys there liked him.  I'll take the next dog to the lake and the beach, we'll go running and we'll play in the park because I love having a dog so much.  So that's at least something to look forward too.

Okay, trigger pulled.  I ordered the package with a Tremolo project AND I finally went to the local electrical supply shop and got a new project box so I can finish the true bypass looper I started forever ago.  I had a box for it that we drilled and then discovered wasn't big enough to fit everything AND a battery , so I got a bigger box this time.  I'm going to use the old box to test finishing methods cause I want these pedals to look nice.

This one is going to be the Wooster & Jeeves True Bypass Looper, and the other one is going to be the Captain Nemo (or Captain Ahab, haven't totally decided yet) Tremolo.  Gonna work on artwork for it tonight.

I can't say anything bad about BYOC. Their products and forum are great. Reminds me a lot of Warmoth and Unofficial Warmoth.  :icon_thumright:

I've been lurking on their forum for a little while.  Tons of great how-to stickys!  Maybe we need to go that route on this forum.  Everyone seems pretty supportive over there too.

I'm on their forum. Here's the build details of my phaser pedal.

I remember seeing that pedal before.  That's how I heard about BYOC.  So was that one of the kits, or did you get a different enclosure and mod a kit?

I bought their basic phaser kit and added the mods from this page loaded into a bigger housing.

I can't say if these mods work on the current phaser kit or not.
