Well, hello everyone!
I recently 'made over' a red Strat and bought a Roadhouse Special neck pickup. http://www.roadhousepickups.com/
I'm VERY happy with this pickup and have a few words to share.

First off the service was great! I was able to talk to Ken for a few minutes about the sound I was looking for and he was very friendly and listened to what I was going for. He wound it right up and the shipping was quick. Good packaging also, very professional.

When I got the pickup, the instal was easy. I'm using it with a humbucker in the bridge. It's a BLUSA XL500. The three way switch chooses either the bridge humbukcer in series, both pickups in parallel or the neck pickup (the roadhouse) on it's own.

The construction was very clean and robust, nothing cheap at all. The leads were nice and sturdy too, not a thin wire.
Output level was pretty high! I was expecting less simply because it's a single coil, but it keeps up with the Bridge Humbucker no problem. :icon_thumright:

The clean sounds are outstanding. Sweet and bigg with no harshness. It's sounds...smooth. The highs are delicate and a bit rounded, but so...attentive! Chords have a wealth of harmonic content. Part of my style is to play moving high notes in a chord. The high notes i was changing didn't get lost in the chord, I could make them out, singing over the lower tones. Single note lines have a sweet ring to them. The level of brightness is just right for jazz, and is also just right for rock! It's hard to describe in words, but it makes me PLAY! The Strat Zazz is there for sure, but better, bigger, more musical. Sort of like a saxophone compared to a recorder.

With Distortion, it still keeps the "rang" of the clean sound, you know, that string 'thnap' that strats make when you dig in to a note. It doesn't get covered up by the gain.
Power chords are power chords, but with this pickup they sound...different. They have a pang on the attack, and them swell and get really phat. If you've ever played guitar through 15 inch speakers then that's the sound I'm talking about. I wouldn't use these as a bridge pickup in a metal band, but it's a real good sound to use for deep rhythms when blended with the bridge 'bucker. One of our songs is a slow drudgy Sabbath type riff and the middle position really deepens things without sacrificing articulation.
On solos, it really shines. The attack is always sharp and crisp. Some times the lower single notes swell to a kind of Fuzz tone, and I think that's a cool sound.  When  you let the note ring out a bit, the sustain is really nice and full.

Well, I hope I've provided a good insight into these pickups. I'd recommend them in a heartbeat for almost everyone. I'd say if you are into death metal or something really crazy like that then these aint for you. Other than that, I can't think of a style of playing these would not do well in. The price is really reasonable so I'd strongly advise anyof you to give them a try. I'm Very happy with it!

Thanks MUYFUE,

It was great working with you. I would like to thank you and everyone who has taken a chance on giving Roadhouse Pickups a try. It's not easy to spend your hard earned money on a fairly unknown, I get that, and I appreciate it.

I would like to point out that the pickups are not overwound. The pickup I made for you was bumped up just a little as to match your application needs a little better. Custom winds are never a problem or extra.

The Specials by nature have a "bigg" sound. That is a common description by users. It takes the classic tones and makes them fuller. It would be like comparing one flower in a vase (stock pickups) to a bouquet of flowers in a vase. There is more harmonic layering and more color. They work great from chicken pickin' to smokin' blues and rock.

Thanks for noticing the quality. All pickups use laser cut flatwork and vintage style cloth covered wire. Covers and mounting screws and wiring diagram are included too.

Waiting for a Roadhouse P-style pickup..

These are in the test phase right now. Look for a  release near the end of this month or so.  :icon_thumright:

Woah. I didn't know you were really making one. Hell, if I can get a good pickup made by a UW board member I'm not even going to install this QP Duncan.

Any plans on J-Bass pickups?  I'll need 2 in about 5 or 6 months  :)

At some point all form factors will be covered. Now that the research and development phase is "essentially" complete, applying that to other pickups will take less time and it will only take tweaking it for each model.

For Bass I have two coil styles up for production. One will use the same coil structure as the Specials. The other has a coil structure that can brighten up the bass pickup. It will make it a little more snappy and "airy". The degree to which is does this is completely controllable during the winding process.

I would love to hear from more bassist about what it is that they would like to see in a pickup or what it is they don't see in models that currently exist.

Woo Hoo!
Spread the Sound around, Ken!
It was great working with you too. I'm waiting for a baritone neck from the sale, then I'm getting a body for it. I'm torn right now between EMGs and passives.
If I go passive I want to request a Humbucker from you that sounds like the pickup you made for the strat. (James Mason voice) Can this be done?

As a reminder that it was for the wife as a christmas present, she was blown away! She goes for Foo Fighters, Black Keys, The Kills and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and such. She's getting spoiled...She's getting a really nice sound off the bat. Thanks again, Ken. I hope this helps spread the word and gets more orders coming your way!

Ken, I'll be in touch with you when my Strat is ready.  :icon_biggrin:

Nice review, Muyfue!

@ MUYFUE - I'm sure I can put something together for you. As soon as the P's are done those are next. Glad to hear your wife is pleased with your wonderful gift, a gift that keeps giving.

@ Hannaugh - It would be my pleasure

@ Max- You can't fool me you silly bot!  :laughing7:

I'm not sure what I'll make yet.
Strat, full traditional tele, something p90ed up, double humbucker....
So many choices...

I'd have to hear what you have to give you feedback on it. I have a particular sound in my head but as far as describing it, no idea. I understand 'bright' and 'warm' but after that people get into 'zing' and 'inky hues' and 'buttery' and 'chocolaty' or 'syrupy' and as I have yet to chew on my pickups to see if they're inky or chocolaty, I wouldn't be able to comment.

Yeah, tone descriptors mean different things to different people. It can be quite maddening trying to accurately describe a tone / sound. How do you properly describe something that is a much emotional as it is musical..? To some bright means brittle while to others it means clear or what ever.

No worries, there will be samples.

I was just molesting my Tele earlier.  Muyfue's right... these pickups make you want to play.  I try every day not to ask TT when the P-90s will be ready.  I have a couple guitars that look at me longingly every day.

I have no clue what "chocolatey" sounds like.  If it means you get the taste of chocolate in your mouth when you hear the sound, then sign me up.  :icon_biggrin:

I was watching a review of Markbass's 200W all tube head and they said it sounded chocolaty. I didn't taste anything but bitterness at the thought that he gets to play with a $3,000 head and I didn't.

Must've been imported dark chocolate for that price!  ???

Do I read that correctly that you will doing a humbucker next?

Well here it goes, I resisted saying anything because I know some of you think I'm a loose cannon or whatever.

TT  (Ken) stopped by my house the other day, he lives a couple miles from me, and brought his axe with his pups in it.

All the reviews I have read so far are accurate, but theres more, I played his guitar on my dirty channel set to a sort of VanHalen or Dokken sound, you woulda thought these were some powerfull humbuckers

They have a great crunchy sound when that's what you want, but when you go to a clean channel, they are incredibly clear with bell like tones and good character, each note rings true. It's hard to explain.

Those of you here that pay attention to your pups know that single coils have the best tone. Humbuckers as good as they might be, loose something in the HumCanceling design. That's well known.

TT's pups have the ability to drive a dirty channel with a vengance, and yet still give a great soft tone on a clean channel.

And when I played a few VanHalen riffs, they sounded great, Chords played on the dirty setting were powerfull, full, and yet each note was clear, no mud

He should call his pups, Mudless          My next pups WILL be Roadhouse
