Reflections on neck selections ...

... well, most of this treatise started here...

I bought a caliper and found some interesting results.  I have a table of five guitars, if anyone is interested.  But for now, I'll just comment.  First, two of my "reference" guitars were an Epiphone SG and Les Paul.  The SG was bigger than my Strat, but the LP felt massive.  I measured them and the two Epi necks are the same!  Same nut width, same neck thickness.  Amazing.  I suppose the overall mass of the guitar's body has some effect on the experience/illusion of neck thickness.  Very strange.  Happily, the LTD/Hammett guitar I liked, with the asymetrical neck, measured in at a tiny .71875 inches.  So if I go with the SRV neck, there will definitely be a size upgrade.

Now onto some true headbanging.  The SG/LP neck comes in around .844" deep.  I measured my Squier "Standard" Strat and it came in at .8125" (which could be .800", as is the "standard").  I found this shocking because my neck feels so scrawny compared to the SG.  I then measured my nut width.  The Squier "Standard" is supposed to be (be spec, and by name) ... well ... "standard" ... but the nut width on my Strat measures 39.3mm (1.547") versus the website documentation and Stratocaster standardness of 42 mm / 1.650".  So, oddly, all along my scrawny Squier Strat neck - which actually felt "thin" to me - was pretty much not thin but just very very narrow.  In addition, I measured my Martin (can't remember the model, but it's like a $1500 acoustic).  It's nut was 1 11/16" while it's neck depth was "only" .7656".  But my Martin never really felt "puny" while playing, nor did it feel drastically smaller than the SG - even though it was.

At least for me, I'm being forced to conclude that nut width is the overriding factor in the experience of neck thickness/size.

General comments?
And, can anyone else second this experience?

indisputable fact. .1 on an inch can have a MASSIVE effect on not only the feel but on your playing comfort/accuracy as well. especially if you have small hands.

if you have hands like hellboy i guess it wouldn't matter what the nut width is.
