I just ordered my second warmoth body, a flamed maple on alder strat. I am going to do the finish myself an am going for something like this:

How should I gO about getting that color? I want it to be a dominate bright fire red but with the underlying yellowish color. I was thinking starting with a deep red dye then sanding back a bit and doing an amber dye. The nitro clear ( stewmac cans). Any ideas?
Thanks!!!

Actually, that's been sealed, then dyed black and sanded back, then a transparent color coat, then (probably) clear. Putting red over yellow or vice-versa isn't going to give you an "underlying color", it's just going to look orange. Although, you may end up using both colors to tint your color coat to get the shade you want.

You'll need to practice on something, and the closer that something is to what you're actually finishing, the better off you'll be. So, you might want to glue some curly maple veneer to a cheap piece of wood like poplar, cut it into strips, and use those to practice on and color test with. It won't break your heart if you screw one of those up on your way to where you want to be, but having to refinish your new body due to a mis-step will certainly wreck your day <grin>

You can dye things that way, but it takes a bit of patience.  I was able to pull off this finish...

With alcohol dyes from ReRanch.  I dyed it black on the surround, then sanded, red all over, then sanded, and then yellow over the top.  The sanding removed the burst edge, so I had to reapply the black around the outside.  I did that with a q-tip, and then blended it is using acetone.  The acetone is a more aggressive solvent and will mess things up if you use too much.  But if you go reasonably slow and dye, then blend, you can get the bursted edge to look right.  The blending made a big difference for the middle so it did not look like there was a break from one color to the next.  Also the middle was subdued a lot this way.
