Here is an interesting one that I have started on.  It has some history that I'll let Bart chime in on with the details but here is what I'm going to do to finish it.
Here are the pieces parts I have recieved.

Here is the Dragonfly inlay on the neck. Pretty cool!

This is how I finished the head stock. First the black dye is sanded back.

Next the purple dye on top of the black and the binding scraped.

Here it is with a few coats of clear. This will be a great color!

On to the body. First fill the back with neutral paste filler.

Taking it off with burlap.

Looks good!

Dealing with parts that will fly under air pressure. First a little two sided tape on the back.

Trim the excess tape off and adhere it to a spray panel, then tape the  spray panel down to the bench and it stays in place for the finish.

I'll add pictures of the top when it gets some color.

Greg,
That pic of the headstock which has been clear coated is the perfect shade of purple!  I love it  :cool01:
I am so glad I did not have you slather that nice BK with a bunch of purple dye.  It's looking nice after a bit of Tonar lovin...

This VIP does have a bit of history.  I believe it was originally owned by Metalman22105 and this is its first look...

I picked up the body from Pabloman, whom I believe won it in some trade.  This was look two...

I added the binding to give those edges some protection and this neck w/ TRC from Attila Custom Guitars.

The rest is in fine hands  :headbang1:

Tonar...that headstock had a lot of color after you sanded before the purple was added.  Was it sanded more after the photo was taken in post

I did not sand the head stock any more than what you see in the photo. The purple is really strong and strikes in real deep. Also I did not use any thinner in the purple, it was used straight out of the bottle. I had to wipe it a little with a damp lacquer soaked rag to lighten it up because the purple was so strong.

Hey guys, anyone ever sell a body and then a little while later something happens to make you think "why the hell did I do that?".

Thats good to know.  I would like to respray the double cut in my signature purple.  It is clear black korina on the back but the thought of sanding off all the amber dye is just mind boggling since it was a hand rubbed finish.    I was thinking of sanding back the clear and spraying the purple on the top.  Do you think I would be OK??

Hand rubbed with finish, what was the finish?

I will say this, I did the body on Bart's guitar yesterday and it did not come out as evenly as the head stock.  The head stock had no previous finish on it so it took the dye real evenly but that was not the case with the body. I'm not sure what it had been through before I got it but fortunately it is going to get bursted so some of the areas that I'm not happy with should get buried in the burst.  All that to say I think it will work on your guitar.

Reminds me of when you had to burst my paisley tele to cover up the many many flaws that I put in when I glued down the paper.  I still feel bad about that actually (even though the guitar is great).

Sorry.  The top is nitro.  What I meant the amber was rubbed in with a rag, not sprayed on top.

Since it is lacquer it will sand down real easy with a DA sander and 220 and then re-dye it with the purple and it will look killer.

If I can't get this guitar to look like I want it with the burst I'll be pulling out the DA myself.

That guitar was dyed with transtint black and amber and then shot with deft. That's how it was when I got it. I sanded the finish off. The back was dyed black as well.

On to the body and the burst for both the body and headstock.
Here it is with the dye and some clear before it was level sanded.
IMG_9999_zpsrejvulzk.jpg

Now it is level sanded and ready for the burst.
IMG_0002_zpsjskqzcfy.jpg

For the burst I mixed black lacquer and threw in some of the purple.
IMG_0004_zpsucudimih.jpg

One coat of clear for the melt coat.
IMG_0008_zpsdoamdztm.jpg

With the binding scraped and it looks amazing! The burst color needs to be seen in person, I think we have a winner!

Here is the headstock burst.
IMG_0005_zpsb16wpeqe.jpg

Melt coat and binding scraped.
IMG_0007_zpsrtohchek.jpg

Now 4 final coats of clear and I'm 2 weeks away from wet sanding and rubbing this baby out!

Greg,
That finish is just :glasses9: beautiful!!!
It looks great before you even do the burst, but that burst really sets it off.
I was a bit worried for a few seconds when you mentioned the top was not finishing as smooth as the headstock.
Looks sweeeet to me...
