PureData and Max/MSP~

Here's hoping nobody else has asked this yet, the search turned up zero results.
And I think this is worthy of the rig forum rather than off topic.

I was wondering if anybody here who likes to use their computer for music has done much with PureData or MaxMSP?  We've just started delving into it in class and I find it fascinating.  My Technology Professor did his sabbatical at IRCAM in Paris where Miller Puckette developed these programs and he actually worked along side him for a bit.  And we also had a couple of guest lectures in class, one was from a guy who is doing research at IRCAM right now with stuff in Max and computer models of orchestration and some other jazz, his name was Gregiore Carpentier and he was a friggen genius.

Anyway.  Due to this rather awful flu season, my professor had to take an entire week off, and was sick 2 more days aside from that, then we had 4 guest lecturers that spoke of nothing that we were doing in class (except for Dr. Carpentier) and at 3 classes a week that means we missed out on 3 weeks of classes, and are so far beind we can't dig deep into Max during class.  It really sucks because this program can do anything.  It even used to support exporting your patches as VST plugins.  (Its changed now because they're in bed with Ableton but whatareyoudonnado?)

So... my question:

Does anybody here use MaxMSP or Puredata for their audio.... stuff?  Use it live? or use it for recording?  Do you use it for anything other than music?

Personally I've had some crazy ideas for guitar pedals, and rather than trying to breadboard them I think I'd like to prototype them in max before taking the step to the real world.

Got any cool patches you'd like to share and talk about?

lemme know!

and if you have no idea what i'm talking about check these programs out:

Max is the more user friendly version that has had a corporate backing and real funding to develop.  It's a bit more sexy and you have to pay for it, but there's a 30 day trial you can download from the website.  The naming convention is MAX = Data, MSP = Audio (its miller puckettes initials), Jitter = video.  thus: MaxMSP.

PureData is essentially the same thing, just as powerful but without all the bells and whistles that max has graphically.  But it's open source and developed by the community including MSP himself.  Some of the objects are a little different but have the same function.  Lke in max an oscilator is "cycle" where in PD its "osc"  stuff like that.

If you havent played around with these programs you need to, they're awesome and they have built in tutorials and manuals.

Thank God.

Only if you are young, female, and attractive. I'll take the funding anyways.

I never do this but...

*bump*

Does nobody know what I'm talking about?  I figured you guys that use Reason would be all over this stuff.

Back when I was more into Radiohead I read some of what Jonny Greenwood did with Max/MSP, and I know there are software loopers written in it too. That's all I know about it I'm afraid, but it seems like a very cool thing.

Care to share a link to what you read?  I'll be reading up as much as I can on this stuff.  When I get home today I'll take a couple of snapshots of what I did for my project in school.  I built an FM synthesizer that works with a midi keyboard,  I also added a reverb unit and a tremolo unit that function kind of like guitar pedals.

The looping stuff was discussed on the Looper's Delight mailing list. Greenwood, eeh... some Radiohead gear Yahoogroup possibly, I'm not sure.

Ok. this was my project in school that I handed in a few days ago.

The first image is the patch I made in presentation mode, made to look pretty and easy to use, without all the programming visible.
The second image is the actualy patch programming that I did, all the objects and patch cords connecting them.
And the third file is the actual patch itself in case anybody decides to download Max or PD (apparently you can open max files in pd)  and want's to take a look at it.

Its an FM synthesizer thats' controlled by midi that has a bypassable reverb and tremolo unit. Spectogam and Sonogram for visualization and an "amp".

what do you think?

This is my new favorite "YouTube comment" quote:

...even if you do know music... the time you took to edit you could've learnt to play the bloody instrument!

it was in reference to the Melodyne "DNA" Direct Note Access editing program that lets you take any recording and turn it into something else, but it has wide, wide applicability to much of the technology that seems to be invented so that you don't have to learn how to play your instrument. Oh gee - and it seems to sell technology, too! :toothy12: :hello2: :blob7:

okay.. the whole... not having to play an instrument thing is a little silly, but I do know how to so I have to say:

That is freaking amazing!  Those Germans..... man.

Kind of reminds me of spear. which is open source.

also.. MaxMSP is a totally different beast. but thanks for sharing.
