Being as the warmoth body is extremely smooth right out of the box, is it necessary to prep sand the body with progressing 120-400 grit sand paper before applying tru-oil?

My understanding is they take them to 220 grit before shipping, which is a good place to start. Inspect the thing, of course. You may find anomalies you want to clean up. Also, it might not be a bad idea to wipe it down with some water to force the grain to raise, let it dry, then give it a going over with some 220 yourself. It may get rid of some hair that isn't obvious. After that, any cleaning should be done with naphtha, which won't raise the grain.

also...depending on the wood, you may be filling the grain.  the Alder and maple seem to be ready right out of the box like Cagey describes.  However deeper grained wood like mahogany and korina take some effort in grain filling if you want a suprt smooth finish.

Yeah, the back of the body I'm body finishing is swamp ash. I love the open grain look so I'm not going to fill it and the guide I have covers how to apply the finish on open pore woods.  :icon_biggrin: I'm going for a dull-gloss look.
