I played flute and oboe in high school band, and bagpipes in the marching band.  There was a neighbouring small town that had a band as well and they had a guitar in the band.  he was a friend of mine and told me that he usually played the oboe parts.  I don't want to knock it or anything, and I certainly love guitar.  But I thought it was very tacky.  When you pull something incredible off the shelf like one of Gustav Holst's suites or a wind arrangement of Pachelbels canon, throwing a guitar in there just took something away from it.  Jazz band was another thing though.  extra-curricular.  I was going to play valve trombone, but ended up on Guitar instead, that's when I started.
Don't let me discourage you though, have fun with it, but I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to learn a wind instrument if I were you, the only thing it could do is make you a better musician and probably even a better guitar player.
