yah, title says it all, my high schools music teacher finally broke down and let me play guitar in the school band. :icon_thumright: Should be an interesting first year.  have any of you guys had any experience play in a band like a symphony band?

Guitar no. I did play alto saxophone right through high school. We had a concert and a big band. Big band was a lot of fun. We played more 1950's rock and swing.

we got to do it back in the 70s in Louisiana. Jazz Band. I thought all schools did.
well not schools in wisconsin, im actually the first person ive ever seen play guitar in school band

I played bass in the high school band... The only fun part of it was me getting to carry it around and doodle throughout the day.

I played flute and oboe in high school band, and bagpipes in the marching band.  There was a neighbouring small town that had a band as well and they had a guitar in the band.  he was a friend of mine and told me that he usually played the oboe parts.  I don't want to knock it or anything, and I certainly love guitar.  But I thought it was very tacky.  When you pull something incredible off the shelf like one of Gustav Holst's suites or a wind arrangement of Pachelbels canon, throwing a guitar in there just took something away from it.  Jazz band was another thing though.  extra-curricular.  I was going to play valve trombone, but ended up on Guitar instead, that's when I started.

Don't let me discourage you though, have fun with it, but I wouldn't pass up the opportunity to learn a wind instrument if I were you, the only thing it could do is make you a better musician and probably even a better guitar player.

Yeah, I play in a school band. We play for chapels.

And I almost got to play bass in the school's pep/marching band but the guy who offered it to me last year got sacked.... :sad1:

I did that back in the 70's in my high school concert band.  We were playing a medley of Chicago songs.  Guitar, Bass, Rhodes piano, TWO drum kits... and the full concert band.  Sounded great!

This was a les paul through the school's super reverb amp.  The school also had a siverface bassman with a big ass 4x15 cab, the Rhodes, and a first generation Music Man stingray.  I guess we were spoiled  :headbang:
